Chapter Fifteen

Sylvie Deering

May 2022

Thursday — 10:09pm

The lower level of the B&B was quiet as Sylvie made her way back down the wide staircase. There had been so much information contained in the materials to sort through that Bit had been sending her throughout the day that she'd decided to work in the comfort of her room for a while. She'd even eaten from the buffet that Audrey had set out for the guests earlier, catching a late dinner right before the owner had begun to clean up for the evening.

Sarah Evanston and her cameraman were the other two guests. The reporter must have sprung for the additional cost to stay somewhere a little more comfortable than the motel near the underpass. Others in the media didn't have the luxury of living beyond their per diem lodging rate. Their presence was the main reason Sylvie had taken her plate up to her room.

Fortunately, Sylvie had been able to read, organize, and even discard data relevant and not relevant to the case. By tomorrow morning, she'd be able to decipher and concisely explain a more detailed look into those individuals connected to the case. She had done her best to distill information down to its most basic elements. She wasn't emotional nor conversely motivated to insert her opinion when facts were sparse. She would identify what information was on hand, ascertain shortcomings in the investigation, and offer possible avenues to pursue leads that would need further scrutiny.

Right now, what she really needed was some type of sugar rush to keep her going in order to finish at a decent enough time to grab maybe five or six hours of sleep. She usually strived for at least eight hours of solid rest, but that was all but impossible during a case such as this.

Not that she would change her role at S&E Investigations, Inc. for anything in the world.

Becoming part of a well-oiled machine...and even what someone could label a family...had most likely saved her from going down a rabbit hole after her abrupt departure from the FBI. Having her life blown apart by her father's money laundering scheme hadn't been part of her plans. While her life might have gone off the rails temporarily, she was finally on the right track in her professional life.

Her personal life was another matter altogether.

Dating apps were now completely out of the picture, for which she wasn't sorry for in the least.

"I can heat that up for you."

A piece of apple pie hadn't been the only reason that Sylvie had ventured down to the first level of the inn. Brook had phoned earlier, and it had turned out that there was a good chance Jake Hudson had been having an affair with the victim. While there had been one or two similarities between Jake Hudson and their profile, Sylvie wasn't convinced that he was their unsub.

Brook's ability to create a profile based on crime scenes was a talent unlike anything that Sylvie had ever seen in her career.
