Stone had never been to the bar Gabriel had named. It was a tiny place on the far end of California Street, an area he’d never frequented much, and he suspected it might have popped up during the time he was away. It was one of those kinds of places you’d probably never see unless you were looking for it.

Kolinsky was already there when Stone arrived, seated in a dim alcove. The place was crowded but nobody got near the dragon’s table.

Stone slid in across from him. “Thanks for showing up. We’ve got to find some new way of communicating. Gabriel’s getting tired of playing messenger, and I can’t very well turn up at your shop anymore, unless you’ve got out of the magic business and started selling high-end dresses.”

The dragon’s eyes narrowed. “I hope you do not plan to begin the habit of summoning me without a very good reason.”

Stone sighed. Dragons. Couldn’t live with ’em, couldn’t drop-kick ’em to another dimension. “I don’t plan to summon you at all. I thought we were friends. Friends do have ways to contact each other, generally. But since you refuse to even enter the twentieth century, let alone the twenty-first, that leaves out most of the common methods, doesn’t it?” He spread his hands. “Look—if nothing else, give me an address where I can send things. That way you can get to them on your own time, and I don’t have to keep bothering your son.”

Kolinsky’s jaw tightened at the word son, but only for a second. “What do you want, Alastair?”

“I need to talk about something, and you’re the only one I can safely do it with.”

“Safely?”

“Yes—well, you or Madame Huan, and I’ve got no idea how to reach her.”

“I see.” The dragon sipped his drink. “What is this about?”

“Aldwyn.”

He inclined his head as if he suspected that. “What about him? As I told you before, I cannot, and will not, involve myself in whatever affairs are between you. It is unfortunate, but it must remain so.”

“Yes, I get that. I’m not asking you to help me. Not directly, anyway. But I was hoping you might at least give me some advice.”

“Regarding what, specifically?”

The server appeared, and Stone ordered a Macallan. Guinness wasn’t going to do the trick tonight. “I can’t tell you everything, but he’s asked me to do an…errand for him.”

Kolinsky’s expression hardened. “An errand. You are hardly an errand boy, Alastair.”

“Yes, well, there’s a bit more to it than that. Please don’t ask for details, but I’m guessing you’re bright enough to work out at least some of them on your own.”

“He has compelled you under an oath.” It wasn’t a question. “Probably as a condition for returning your son to you when he had gone missing.”

One thing that was occasionally nice about dragons was that most of them were quicker on the uptake than most humans. It could be inconvenient when you didn’t want them to figure something out, but useful when you did. “I can neither confirm nor deny that, and I’m not sure what would happen to me if I tried.
