FITNESS ASSESSMENT

What gets measured gets done! I’ve mentioned it before, and I will keep saying it. Measuring and tracking your progress are essential for you to awaken the sexy within. Read chapter 3, on accountability, again. You will be seven to eight times more likely to succeed if you track what it is that you are doing with your health and fitness. Most clients I work with are looking to shed several pounds of fat. I’ve worked with people wanting to gain 20 pounds (10 kilograms) of muscle through to those who want to lose 250 pounds (120 kilograms) of fat. It really doesn’t matter where you are right now. The point is that we need to measure exactly where you are now, then measure your progress against that initial assessment.

Most people only measure their success based on the number they see on the scales. The problem with this approach is that it doesn’t consider progress you have been making in other areas. Your body is composed of water, muscle, and fat. Right now, you will weigh a certain weight. Let’s say, for example, that you currently weigh 175 pounds (80 kilograms). At that weight, you will have a certain body fat percentage. Let’s now say that after 4 weeks of following your meal plan and exercise program, you stand on the scales and there is no change in your weight. You’re okay with the results, but you really wanted at least 4–8 pounds (2–4 kilograms) of weight loss. Does that mean you’ve been unsuccessful? I would say the answer is yes—if you are only focused on what the scales show you.

However, if you complete the fitness assessment below, you will see that the number on the scales is merely one component of success. The reality could be that your measurements have reduced, that you’ve put on 4 pounds of muscle and lost 4 pounds of fat. It’s just that the scales reflect no downward movement, but your body fat percentage has improved. You feel great, you’re sleeping better, you’re functionally stronger, and you have more energy. Now, that sounds much more powerful than no change in the scales, don’t you think? Therefore, it is so important to capture this data when you first begin. The ongoing assessments will go a long way to keeping you inspired and motivated.
