It was as if you had sensed me from the furthest distance away. As if I had wandered far off in the universe and, knowing me, needing me, you called me to you. I lay, thinking of mum. How pleased she was about us. ‘I always knew he was a promising intelligent young man, handsome too.’

Johno – you were the biggest and best surprise of my life and I didn’t know how to begin to unwrap you. As you lie asleep your body makes a leggy architecture. Built of bones, blood, sleep and dreams. Your arms and legs, torso and ass, head and shoulders create a tumbled tesserae house of happiness around you. I slid my hands over your sweet nakedness, memorising the feel and smell of you. Sometimes you sleep like an Egyptian mummy, hands crossed on your chest, your face to the ceiling.

Was your body reliving a past life? Sometimes I think that those who believe that our bodies remember past lives are correct but surely there have been other lives you have lived since 3000 years ago? Surely there were other earthly sojourns which made an impression on you too?

Or maybe it’s true that we can visit and revisit life many times and sometimes this world makes an impression on the soul and at other times it does not.
