Chapter Thirteen

As Bell raced on ahead of Dax he became aware of one important fact. The scream wasn’t coming from Kalieta, nor from anywhere in the vicinity of Petrin’s farm. He altered course, knowing Dax would follow without breaking his stride. As another scream tore through the peaceful surroundings, he put on another burst of speed. He heard Dax scream at him to slow down. But he couldn’t. That was a young female voice and his protective instincts were out in full force. As he raced past the farm, he saw Petrin look at him and nod.

Dax was racing after Bell, cursing up a storm. Damned idiot should be waiting for back up. No matter how desperately he wanted to save whoever was in trouble, it wouldn’t do any good to go charging in without knowing what they were facing. As he raced past Petrin, he saw Kalieta leaving the cabin, her bag slung over one shoulder, Nerin beside her, strapping on a belt holding a dagger and short sword at his side.

Dax shouted towards Nerin. “Protect your sister and grandfather.”

Nerin nodded, before realizing Dax wouldn’t see. “I will. We will follow you in case someone needs Kalieta.”

“Just be careful,” Dax yelled. He didn’t have the time to persuade them to wait. Besides, whoever was in trouble was one of their friends or neighbors, and he would do the same in their situation.

He finally caught up with Bell, who was softly pacing back and forth looking at the situation playing out in front of them. The same warriors from before had a young woman pinned to the ground. She was no longer screaming. Instead, she was completely silent, tears flowing unchecked down her face like a river. One of the warriors held a serrated dagger to her throat, the teeth breaking through the skin at several points, a small trickle of vibrant red blood cascaded down her throat, pooling in the dimple at the base of her throat.

Bell could smell the blood and his nostrils were flaring at the harsh copper tang. He was as angry as his darintha was. There was no way for him to wrest control away from his beast. If he had been in Tarin form to start with, he might have been able to maintain control. Now though, his beast wanted to rescue, to save, and to protect. His claws were flexing in and out, rhythmically. He was coiled and ready to spring at a moment’s notice.

The officer from their previous encounters was ranting and raving about how he was suffering for not being able to find the Offworlders. How he was being beaten by his commanding officer for his failures, how if he was going to suffer, so would they.

Dax shared a look with Bell. There was no way he was going to let this happen. Odds of seven to two were well in their favor— what’s more, these warriors looked to be badly trained. Otherwise Dax and Bell would have been spotted long before now.
