CHAPTER XXV

“I'm not engaged.”

Eddie says this calmly and coolly. I cross my arms and scowl, refusing to look over at him, but still staring anywhere but down. The balloon is slowly, but steadily, increasing speed and height.

It’s making my insides clench in an alarming manner.

“Fiancée denotes engaged,” I snark.

“I was engaged—past tense. Here, you want to look down below?” he offers.

“No!” I yell, remaining firmly in the center of the basket. “I don't want to look over the side.”

“Why? Are you afraid I'm going to push you over it?”

I roll my eyes.

“If anyone is shoving anyone overboard, it's me.”

“I love your fire, Aurora. It burns brighter than the Northern Lights when you let it out.”

“Yeah, well, you won't like it so much when I murder you.”

He tugs on a coil of my hair.

“As I was saying, I was engaged to a beautiful woman who, in some ways, reminds me of you.”

“What happened?” I prompt when he stops.

“I came home from work one night and found her in bed with my brother. My brother who, according to her, made more money and was better looking.”

I eyeball Eddie hard.

“And I remind you of this gold-digging trollop?!”

“Not like that you don't,” the giant blond man chuckles. “She was really hard working, too—it’s something I admired in her. That's why I was surprised when she said my brother made more money. As a wilderness guide, I really don't make a lot. It's just something that I enjoy and gets me by. Vanessa always was working. Her profession was her life. In fact, it's one of the reasons why I kept on with my job. When I first got engaged with her, I offered to quit and find a different one so that I could be home more often. But Ness planned to keep working the same long hours; so, I stayed on with my job. I guess I didn't realize how far apart we'd grown—or how close she had become with my brother while I had been away.”

I hear the pain of his fiancée’s and brother's betrayal in Eddie's voice.

“I can see now how we weren't compatible, but. . .” he trails off.

“But it still hurts.” I finish for him.

“Yeah,” Eddie murmurs, “it still hurts. How about you?”

“Are you asking me if I've been engaged, and the person stepped out with my sister?” I wonder with a laugh.

“Yeah, something like that.”

“No, I'm an only child. My parents, they. . .”

“It’s ok if you don’t want to talk about it. Lynx told me—please, don’t be mad that he told Orson and me. He just got the impression that you didn’t want to keep rehashing it with each of us.”

“I'm not upset at Lynx. Honestly, he’s right. It is too hard for me to keep talking about.”

“Lynx can probably relate,” Eddie says thoughtfully. “He mentioned you have trouble opening up, too, and I didn’t want to push you out of your comfort zone.”

I look at him askance.

“We’re hundreds of feet above the ground in a death contraption,” I point out dryly.
