The girl who wasn't there

I used to run a girls' choir. There were about thirty of them, aged from ten to thirteen or so, and they came once a week after school to the Music Centre where I worked.

One week I was in my office getting ready for the choir practice. My office was in the corridor that led to the classroom where we held the practice, so the girls arriving had to walk past my door. As I left the office to go to the photocopier, one of them was just arriving.

“Hallo, Anna,” I said. “Hallo, Mr.B,” she said. She was a big girl for a thirteen year old, plump and pretty with very long dark hair which she was proud of. I imagine she had walked from her home to the Music Centre, for she lived not far away and there were no major roads to cross.

Choir practice started. I marked the register by glancing round the room as usual, for I have always prided myself on knowing every pupil's name. Then we warmed up as we always did, and then began work on the repertoire. After an hour we usually had a fifteen minute break, and the girls would go to the lavatory, or run across to the Sports Centre and get chocolate from the machine there. After break they returned, and we started work for another hour.

After twenty minutes or so I spotted that Anna wasn't there. “Where's Anna?” I said.

There was silence. “Don't know,” said one girl, “she was here in the first half.” A couple of other girls agreed with her.

“Did anyone see her during the break?”

No one had. I thought for a moment, and decided that the most likely thing was that she'd felt unwell and had gone home during the break. I would phone at the end of the rehearsal and check.

The two hours soon went, and so did the girls. I put the room straight, gathered up the music and went back to my office. I looked up Anna's number and dialled. Her mother, a woman I knew slightly, answered.

“Good evening,” I said, introducing myself. “I was wondering – is Anna all right?”

“Oh yes,” she said. “She couldn't come this evening, she's got something on at school.”

“So she's been at school all this evening?”

“Oh yes. She didn't come home for tea, they were having something there.”

I thanked her and hung up. I never found an explanation.
