Chapter Three

Each step down the back stairs was a new experience in throbbing ass pain, but somehow I managed to make it without screaming. Sobbing - yes, howling in agony - no. I stood at the doorway into the kitchen, and just sort of peeked in; would the ladies snap at me? If they were anything like my dad, they would.

The two of them were bustling about the room, getting pancakes, grits, bacon and eggs, and a pot of English breakfast tea ready. Both seemed incredibly chipper and happy; not at all what she expected. Still, she was too nervous to speak, so she just cleared her throat. Jane and Trudy turned to face her, both smiling.

“Good mornin’!”the said together.

Trudy gestured at a side of the small rectangular table that did nothave a chair at it.“We figured you might want to…stand this mornin’, honey child.”

“Come on in; food is pipin’hot, and we’re both hungry!”Jane said, bringing the bacon and eggs to the table.

I moved in to the side of the table, still with butterflies fluttering about in my stomach.“Ah…I must say, you two are far…nicer than I was expecting.”

They both laughed.

“Ah, expectin’us to hold a grudge, eh, sweetie?”Jane said, taking a seat.

“Well…to be honest, in a word…yes,”I said slowly.

Trudy nodded.“Many people expect that, but that’s not our way. Once a…transgression has been…paid for, it’s forgiven.”

I poured some tea and sweetened it.“Oh, the old,‘Forgive and forget’routine?”

Trudy sort of…winced as she hewed and hawed.“Well…sort of. We forgive, and we tryto forget, but…let’s face it - are we really gunna forget what went on last night?”

Now it was my turn to wince, from the emotional and physical pain that memory called up.“Ah…yeah, I see what you…mean. But, you’re sure handling this better than my mom and dad ever did. Goodness, they never stop going on and on about my…ah, mistakes.”

“Ah, well, there’s where we differ - we will notdo that to you!”Trudy said.

I looked over my shoulder.“But you will…punish, won’t you?”

Jane gave a firm nod.“Yes, we will!”

“And, as I said before, any time you think we’re unreasonable, you can move out.”

I nodded.“Yes, I remember that.”

“Yes, pity you didn’t remember our rules!”Jane snapped.

Trudy patted her arm.“Now-now, sis’, let’s not waste time lookin’back; let’s move on. Sarah, I’ll not tell you again; I ain’t allowin’those ho’clothes in this house! You get rid of them and those‘dental floss’panties of yours, and dress decent.”

“But, Miss Trudy, be reasonable; that’s how people dress today. With all due respect, the dating scene is different from when you were young.”

The two ladies truly roared with laughter at that one, and my brow wrinkled. God, what was so fucking funny?

“Oh, come on, things aredifferent today!”I complained.

“Honey child,‘Fannie Hill’was written in 1748, and they ain’t invented nothin’new since then.”

“Fannie what?”I said.

“It’s a book,”Jane said.“One of the first modern erotic novels ever written in English, and it was bannedbecause of it. Get it, read it, you’ll see!”

“I’ll lend you my copy.”

My eyebrows shot up and I grinned at Miss Trudy.“Ahhh…really? Huh…okay, I’ll…check it out.
