Chapter 34
Lutz made the call, and while we waited for word from the Brownsville Police Department, I did a search on the criminal database for Luca Vasquez and found that heâd served four years in prison, from 2008 to 2012, for forging wills, insurance, and travel documents. The travel documents part caught my attention. I checked the time, and it was getting late. Iâd need to pass some of these tasks off to the night shift guys.
âHenry?â
âYep.â
âCan you see if Jared Bell is in the building? Iâm sure Conway has called him by now. He and Maria Vasquez need to be spoken to again, but of course, we canât talk to them without Bell present. I want Maria to know weâve just added obstruction and lying to police to her list of charges.â I waited as Henry wrote down the additional charges, then continued. âThere are plenty to go around for Conway too. We need him to tell us who this Cruz character is and where to find him, along with the Vasquez boys. We have to instill the fear of God into that assholeâs mind. He and Maria are going down, thatâs for sure, and Hal might be right behind them. As soon as the Vasquez brothers are located, theyâll be locked up for life. Make sure Conway knows if he talks, he gets a deal, but it expires a minute after you offer it.â
Henry pushed back his chair and pocketed the slip of paper. âSounds good. Anything else?â
âNope, the night crew can take care of the rest. I want to go over Lucaâs past crimes with Lutz before I head home.â
I gathered my notes and made a call to Lutzâs office to make sure he was there. âWe need to go over things before I leave for the day.â
âSure thing, Jesse. Iâm going to stick around, anyway, until I hear back from Brownsville. Come on in.â
I left my desk and, at the third office on the left side of the hallway, rapped on Bobâs door.
âCome in.â He closed out whatever he was looking at on his computer and motioned to the guest chair. âSit.â
I did, although I would have preferred to pace. Iâd been sitting and waiting in a holding pattern for the majority of the Morton case.
âI take it you havenât heard back from Brownsville yet?â
âNot yet, and itâs been forty-five minutes.â Bob tipped his chin at the folder Iâd placed in front of me on his desk. âWhat have you got?â
I huffed. âA copy of Luca Vasquezâs police jacket. He spent four years in the pen for several offenses, one being forging travel documents.â
A wide grin spread across Lutzâs face. He rubbed his hands together briskly then mimicked a noose being pulled tightly around his neck. âJohn and Curt are going down, and itâs all because the Vasquez brothers killed Tina for their sister. Every bread crumb we uncover will lead us right to John and Curt Vance.â
âI think we have enough circumstantial evidence to get search warrants for both Mauricio and Antonioâs apartments.
