High tide pushed the waves farther up the beach. Pierce relaxed as they moved away from Garcia’s. The way Kai had approached them and Tim’s response nagged at him. He felt like he didn’t have any say in what was happening around him. He wanted to just relax and get to know Tim, unless all the hassle of being a bear shifter was too much baggage. If there was one thing Pierce didn’t like in the guys he dated, it was baggage.

“You’re being really quiet,” Tim said as they strolled along the water’s edge.

Pierce wasn’t sure how to put his feelings into words. “Just thinking.”

“Hey, sorry about my family coming on so hard.” Tim ran his foot through a bit of sea foam that had washed up at the high water mark. “It’s just how we are. It comes with being bears.”

A weak chuckle escaped Pierce. “And before tonight, the only bears I thought I might date are buff hairy guys. It is a bit to take in.”

Tim laughed and grabbed Pierce’s hand. “You know, I’m a buff hairy guy.”

“I can tell.” Pierce shook his head, but didn’t pull his hand out of Tim’s. “And I’m not complaining.”

“Good.”

Splashing drew Pierce’s attention away from Tim. “What’s that?”

As they paused, Tim cocked his head and listened. “Sounds like something beached.”

Pierce let go of Tim’s hand and hurried toward the sound. The evening light had faded enough that just solar lights at the end of private walks were the only illumination on the beach.

Tim caught his arm and stopped him in a deep pool of shadows. “Slow down. I can see better in this light than you can. You almost stumbled over a huge piece of driftwood.” Tim kicked it to make a point.

“I wonder if I should go back to the Explorer and get a flashlight?” Pierce had dropped into animal rescue mode and wasn’t thinking of his own safety. So often he was brought animals after someone else had found them. It was rare he had a chance to save them before someone else got to them.

“If you let me guide you, we’ll be fine.” Tim kept hold of his arm. “Think of me as your seeing-eye bear.”

The full laugh that came out of Pierce felt good. He tried to remember the last time a guy had made him laugh. “Okay.”

With Tim leading, they made their way further down the beach.

“Shit, that’s a large turtle.”

“Turtle?” Pierce repeated as he peered through the darkness, wishing that he had more light, or that his eyes would adapt.

“Yeah, a big green, I think.”

They were finally close enough that Pierce could make out the large shape splashing in a pool of water left behind from the tide’s highest mark. “Okay, I see it, but I need to figure out what’s wrong with it.”

“Looks like some kind of rope around its neck,” Tim said. “Nylon, I’d say by the way it’s reflecting starlight.”

“Wow, your night vision is really good if you can see it reflecting starlight tonight.
