Chapter Nine
S
tanding outside in the corridor, Andrew stared at his bedroom. The door was still smashed, but even if it had been repaired, he couldn’t sleep in that room. Radan joined his side. creeping up on him. Andrew had grown used to it, sometimes his heart jumping, like some love-sick boy, when he heard that familiar footstep, or caught thevampire’s spice scent.
“What’s wrong?” Radan asked. “I’m going to doss down somewhere else. This room creeps me out. I saw an office down the corridor, with a sofa.”
Radan laughed. “Trust me, you can’t sleep there. That’s Jaidyn’s office. Ley and he make out on that sofa all the time. The cat pheromones in there make me sneeze. And you want to try and sleep there? Mate, you’d get wired by the scent. Maybe not such a bad idea, might make you want a kiss or two from me, huh?”
Andrew grunted.
“You’re blushing again.” Radan laughed. “You could sleep in the boardroom, there’s a large leather chaise. But why not sleep over at my place?”
“I sleep alone.”
“So do I.” Radan quirked his brow. “I’ve got a sofa-bed in the spare room. You’d be safe enough there from me.”
“I’m not scared of you.”
“No? You’re always skittish when I’m near.”
“Am not.”
“Trust me, you do a little leap backwards or to the side, like I’m gonna jump you. I said I won’t.” Radan shook his head, and Andrew shrugged. Rad was always flicked his hair from his eyes, chin raised.“Skittish, babe, that’s you.”
“Don’t call me babe,” Andrew whispered, smiling.
“What shall I call you then?” Radan’s voice was deep, and sultry, his gaze lambent. Andrew’s nerves spiked.
“You’re not playing fair with me, Skippy.”
“I never said I would, cop-boy.”
Their gazes locked. Stalemate, Andrew thought.“Right.”
“Then, we’ll go across to my warehouse. Meet me in the foyer in half an hour. Okay?”
* * * * They emerged from the tunnel in the back room of Radan’s warehouse.
Radan sent out for food from Desert Oasis, and once it had arrived, they sat at the kitchen table, sharing the various dishes. Gyng padded into the room, leaping on the servery. Silently Radan filled a crystal dish of falafel, rice, and salmon fillets for the cat.
“I’ll just open the back door for you, Gyng. I know you like to patrol the alleyway.” He smiled at Andrew. “The cat has his own beat, just like a cop,and he scruffs any interlopers.”
“The long arm of the paw, huh?” Andrew said and Radan laughed.
After finishing their meal, they took their cognac into the sitting room and sat before the blazing fire. The silence was comfortable, and Andrew felt no need to make conversation. It was enough to sit and watch the flames and drink the liquor that teased his mouth like a lover’s kiss. He coughed at the thought and sipped more brandy. He kicked off his boots and let the fire heat up his feet.
“Andrew?”
“Mmmm?” He raised his gaze, senses lulled by the cognac and the smooth as velvet timbre of Radan’s voice. Hell, that voice was so silky.
