“You said there was someone out to get my brother. I’m here for that reason only. Start talking, Trent.”
I placed my hands on my hips where I stood in Trent’s living room, acting more fierce than I actually felt.
This enormous house was in the same gated community where Flex lived. I wasn’t even sure if Flex knew Trent lived there as well.
Trent didn’t look like a crime boss. Although I’d never met a crime boss before, Trent wasn’t what I would have pictured in my mind. His black hair was styled in a messy array on top of his head, and he couldn’t have been older than forty. He kept himself in good shape, his body toned and trim in a dark blue polo shirt with black slacks. His teeth gleamed bright white when he smiled, although the smile never reached his eyes. There were no laugh lines there, no trace of happiness on his handsome face. Only greed.
Trent sat across the room, in a leather chair beside the fireplace. Just staring at me thoughtfully. Almost as if he could read my swirling haze of thoughts, he spoke.
“Flex was earning a lot of cash from a lot of different places back then. Of course he made enemies.”
Throwing my arms up, I stalked toward him but stopped five feet away. It was like there was a force field around Trent, warning me not to get too close. “That has nothing to do with me. Flex made his own choices. But I’m not going to let you hurt him.”
Trent’s brows lifted as he scanned my face. Then his eyes traveled down my body and I felt like I needed to take a shower. “Oh? What are you going to do?”
I turned toward the door. “I’m leaving. And I’m going to tell my brother to have nothing to do with you ever again, Trent. He owes you nothing. This is over.”
He was standing in front of me before I’d taken two steps, and I was forced to a halt.
“You’re free to leave whenever you want.” He leaned into me, his warm breath wafting over my face. My stomach turned. “But if you cooperate with me, we can all win in this situation.” He walked me forward until I dropped into a chair, his tall form towering over me.
“I’m going to have one of my associates let your brother know where you are. He can come pick you up. And then he and I can finally get some things settled.”
I pressed my lips together, staying mute. But my insides had turned to Jell-O. I’m just the bait. I placed my trembling hands under my legs to hide them. The shaking wasn’t limited to my hands. I could feel my jaw beginning to quiver, but I clenched it shut and stayed quiet.
I glanced around the room once, twice. Attempting to get the lay of the land. Not that I’d be allowed to get up and move. Maybe I should try. They wouldn’t kill me before
