Giles

Since he’d been to his flat, Joshua had been quiet and withdrawn. Plotting, he was definitely plotting. I could read him so well it was easy to see when his gears were grinding. And his were steaming with the effort.

He wasn’t talking though; his discussions were internal, and I wasn’t privy to them, didn’t matter what way I tried to tease them from him. He’d well and truly shut me out and I fucking hated it. The man was up to no good, that cloying feeling drenched me every time I watched him sink into his head.

I’d come into work deciding that hovering over Joshua was pointless. He was a grown man, he’d do whatever he wanted even if I went against him. I wasn’t his keeper and I had no desire to control him.

“I thought Liam wasn’t coming back until after Chester had been sentenced?” I asked Ted as I took another look at the smiling PA working at his desk.

“He’s bored.” My brother gave a mocking eye roll.

“Oh Teddy... you need some pick me up pills to keep your boy happy?”

“Fuck. You.”

“Your condom prank was hilarious by the way. Remind me to get you back for that one.”

Ted let out a laugh. “Your boy like that, huh?”

“He asked if I was going all Hulk on him. Didn’t spoil the moment, numb nuts.”

Despite Joshua’s brooding, my mood had lifted considerably, being back at work the one thing I needed. I couldn’t take any more time off, not to the degree I had recently. There was no point in worrying about what Joshua was doing either. If a problem arose, there were men in the building more than capable of dealing with anything that arose.

“Where’s dad?” I hadn’t seen him for three days, since the court hearing. He’d been uncharacteristically quiet.

“I think he’s indulging his cravings.”

“For three days? He’s an old man for Christ’s sake.”

“Well... you know dad.”

Unfortunately, I did. For years we’d known his sexual encounters were rarely a one-night thing, he fucked for days rather than hours. The man’s virility knew no bounds, even at his age. Go dad!

“Joshua is retracting his tribunal petition for unfair dismissal.” We’d discussed it over our meal the night before, him stating he simply wanted it over with, wanted to move on. I had agreed with him.

“That makes sense. He won’t have a problem finding employment now,” Ted said regretfully.

“I think he wants his licence back, to practice law again. Says he misses it.”

“Really?” My brother looked up surprised. “You think we could snap him up?”

“Is that a good idea?”

Rubbing his thumb over his lip, he eyed me. “Why not?”

“Who he is, for one...”

“And?”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, Ted, don’t be naïve,” I growled in irritation at my twin.

“I’m not. Humour me?”

“I doubt Joshua will want to work alongside the man he goes home with.” Liam and Ted made it work, didn’t mean it would for Joshua and me though.

“It’s an idea. We need another lawyer. Our workload is getting heavier, we’re stretched thin as it is.
