Chapter Fifteen

I replay the moment with Eli at the 5K over and over in my head. The change in the way he was looking at me—like a switch was flipped.

I’m thinking about it even now as I lounge on my bed that evening. Morgan whacks at a drum pad on the floor near my feet. Outside, the weather has turned windy and cold, bringing with it the smell of dry leaves and Halloween and warm, spicy drinks. It’s the first time that Mom has switched on the heat, and I’m enjoying the fact that I can lie around in a T-shirt and gym shorts without feeling like my limbs will freeze off.

“So, do you want to talk about it?” Morgan says.

I realize she’s stopped drumming. “Hm?”

“You’ve been mooning around, chuckling to yourself every few minutes. It’s obvious something happened after I left you with Zion. So. Do you want to talk about it, or what?”

“Er—uh—it’s not, there’s nothing with Zion,” I stutter, my brain confused as I try to switch over from Eli Mode.

Morgan raises her eyebrows. “Uh-huh. Sure.” She starts drumming again.

“I mean, there might be something with him,” I say. “I can’t tell. He’s really nice and he keeps inviting me to things and maybe flirting, but it doesn’t ever go further, you know? I like him, I do. But . . .” I clear my throat, considering what to say. “. . . He wasn’t actually who I was thinking about.”

I flop over to look at Morgan, bursting to tell her my secret. I’m terrible at holding in my feelings, and the fact that I haven’t discussed this stuff with her yet is a little ridiculous.

“I kind of had a moment with Eli.”

She hits the pad so hard one of her drumsticks goes flying. “Say what?”

I sigh dramatically. “I know. I am ashamed. It happened after I split ways with Zion. One second Eli and I were arguing about his suspension, and the next, we were staring into each other’s souls.”

“And how’d that turn out for you?” She stands up to retrieve her drumstick, then parks herself next to me on the bed.

“Nothing happened. But I just keep thinking about it. Thinking about him. I don’t know. I guess I miss him.”

“It hasn’t even been a month since you broke up. What changed?”

“I guess the contest is just bringing out new sides in us or something. We never really knew each other super well, you know? We were just ‘mutual friends of Morgan.’”

Morgan rolls her eyes. “Oh, I know, trust me. You two were too busy making out in the basement to play a get-to-know-you game.”

I bat my eyes at her. “Sorry for getting some.”

“It’s not only that,” Morgan says, barely acknowledging my innuendo. “I just don’t know about Eli. He can be . . . militant sometimes. A bit too intense.”

That doesn’t jibe at all with the Eli I know. Morgan’s acting weird, not meeting my eye.

“What do you mean, militant? Was he like that with you?”

Morgan sighs.
