The next day Lizzie and I ran the tape over to Deacon, after Lizzie’s fresh strawberry pastries of course. He wasn’t happy to see us at first, but his attitude changed quickly upon seeing the tape.

“Who is Artemis?” he asked.

“That’s her cat. She liked to leave messages for him,” I said.

Deacon raised a suspecting brow. “And what’s this part about ‘warning other witches.’ What does that mean?”

“Griselda was one of those pagan types.” Lizzie rolled her eyes and tutted. “Crystals, chakras, cleansing auras… all that kind of nonsense. You know the type.”

He tapped his fingers over his desk. “I’m not sure about this.”

“What’s wrong?” Lizzie and I glanced at one another.

“An old woman leaves messages to her cat and thinks she’s a witch. It raises some questions about her mental faculties. If her mind was on its way out, then I would expect some paranoia and delusion.”

“She wasn’t bonkers, Deacon,” Lizzie stressed. “She was just eccentric. Come on. You asked us for the evidence, and we brought it to you. Isn’t this what you wanted?”

“I guess you’re right,” he said after a long moment. “Something tells me this is worth looking at.”

“You’ll take it to the judge?” I asked excitedly.

“Sure will,” he said. He turned out of his chair and grabbed his jacket. “I’m going to run this down to townhall now. Judge Barrow is there until noon. If I hurry, I can get the ball rolling.”

I was pleased to see Deacon was taking this thing seriously now.

“What should we do?” I asked.

“It’s probably best you both tag along. If Judge Barrow has any questions about the case, you can provide more info.” He glowered at Lizzie. “Wait a second. Are you allowed near the town hall?”

“Not for another month,” she beamed proudly. “I’ll have to hang back on this one.” She looked at me. “I’ve got some outfit shopping to do. Meet me at Ali Baba’s after lunch?”

“Ali Baba’s?”

“It’s the fancy-dress shop in town. There’s a big Halloween fair at the end of the month and the whole town dresses up. We can pick out outfits together.”

Deacon led the way out of the station. I was excited to take a ride in a cruiser, but he walked past the line of police vehicles parked outside.

“I thought we’d be speeding through traffic with sirens on,” I said sadly.

Deacon laughed and pointed across the park to a large columned building on the other side. “The townhall is only a minute’s walk that way. I tell all the guys to walk over if they have to visit. Walking is good for you and it saves the planet from more exhaust fumes.”

I swooned. An environmentalist. A man after my own heart.

“Do you think this judge will sign off on the exhumation?”

“I hope so. We don’t get a lot of bad action in this town, so the thought that a murderer is on the loose is quite worrying.”

“What did Lizzie do to get barred from the townhall?”

We crossed the road on the opposite side of the park and started up the tall steps leading into the townhall.
