The building was just as Maggie had left it: silent and brooding. They crept up the steps, avoiding boards with nails that popped to the surface in a carpenter’s game of whack-a-mole, and hovered at the door. Constantine reached up and loosened the porch lightbulb. The porch fell into darkness.

As Maggie had grudgingly agreed, Constantine would fish for whatever Brock had crammed beneath the Whitleys’ door while Maggie played look-out. She stared into the street, watching for passersby, looking for hints that they’d been discovered hovering outside the home of Hollow Pine’s most tragic family. Behind her she heard the grate of a coat hanger as Constantine slipped it beneath the door.

“Almost got it,” he whispered. “Almost got…damn.” He dropped the coat hanger with a clatter. They tensed, ready for the Neighborhood Watch to pounce, for a beat cop to come ambling up. The street’s silence continued unabated.

Constantine angled the metal rod again. There was another rasp of metal on wood, the crinkle of paper, the long drag of something hauled from the depths. Constantine sprung to his feet, paper in hand.

He gave her a triumphant smile and a quick hug, then palmed the paper, remembering to play it cool. They sauntered casually to the Datsun and shut themselves inside its metal cocoon.

“What does it say?” Maggie hissed in the darkness.

Constantine hit the car’s interior lights, smoothed the paper on the console between them. The anemic bulb illuminated a single sentence scrawled in pencil.

I’m coming for you.
