Chapter Six
NICOLAI got out of his car and walked to his front door, sending Brian a text that he’d made it home safely.
How did it go? Brian responded with a text message.
All done, Nicolai sent with a smile. He’d spent much of the past two months traveling back and forth to Chicago, working on the Chagall windows, which, as it turned out, were in amazing condition and only needed minor repairs, which the Art Institute had him complete. The job was done, and he was home and looking forward to some quiet time with Brian.
His phone vibrated again with another message from Brian. Dinner to celebrate?
Nicolai answered yes and continued up the walk. His phone vibrated again, and Nicolai looked at the screen, but noticed that the message wasn’t from Brian. Huffing, Nicolai looked at the message and saved it like Brian had told him to do, but he still shivered, even on the warm spring evening. Got a message from Justin, Nicolai sent to Brian, and he got a response that Brian was leaving the office now and would be there right away.
Nicolai hurried toward the house, looking all around him. That last message from Justin had him a little freaked, and he wanted to get inside. Unlocking the door, Nicolai hurried inside, closing the door hard enough that the vibrations shook through his feet. Nicolai relocked the door and peered out through the curtains. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, he calmed himself down and settled in to wait for Brian.
A short while later, Nicolai’s phone vibrated, and he saw a message from Brian that he would be there in ten minutes. Nicolai watched for his car and opened the door as Brian approached the house. Brian hugged him tight as soon as he was in the house, and Nicolai felt some of his nervousness slip away, his lover’s strength and protectiveness soothing his rattled nerves. Brian was here and he wouldn’t let anything happen to him.
Sitting in the living room a few minutes later, Nicolai handed Brian his phone and let him see the messages. “On their own, these messages don’t seem threatening,” Brian told him after looking up. “A court would not understand why these are frightening, but I know they are.”
Brian showed him the last message: I like your blue shirt.
“How did he know what I was wearing?” Nicolai asked.
“Exactly. He may have seen you at some point today, or he may be watching you. I don’t know, but I think it’s time we found out. I have a friend, a private investigator, who also happens to be really huge. I want to have him put the fear of God into Justin. Maybe he’ll get the message and leave you alone.”
Nicolai read Brian’s lips and nodded his approval. He’d really thought Justin would move on and leave him alone, but that didn’t appear to be the case. “Can we talk about something else?” Nicolai asked, signing his question as well. He and Brian had agreed to try to sign as much of their conversations as possible.
