Chapter 11

Laura And Aríel Take A Risk

Everyone had gone to bed and Laura could hear the soft snores of Emily and Andrea near her. No matter how hard she tried, she could not get to sleep. Every time she thought of the horses charging through Akureyri and the possibility of many of them dying to save Gígja, she shuddered. If only there was some other way. She tossed and turned, the straw rustling beneath her, until suddenly, she heard a familiar voice.

“Laura! Laura! I know you are awake! I have an idea! You need to come to me!”

“Aríel!” Laura silently thought back. “Where are you?”

“Just come to the herd! Bring your warrior’s gear,” Aríel said, obviously excited about something. “South of the village. I will find you.”

Laura donned her clothes, then the leather jerkin and weapons Arnþor had given her, fumbling a little in the darkened room. She had taken out her long braid, but didn’t want to take the time to redo it, so she just caught the long crimped strands back and tied it with a string in a long ponytail that fell almost to her waist in a wavy mass. At one point, Andrea mumbled and shifted. Laura froze, not moving until she heard Andrea’s regular breathing again. She slipped out of the house, making sure she didn’t make any noise. She was a little concerned that she was going to be in danger – why would Aríel tell her to bring her weapons and protective gear? Nervous, she kept looking around as she headed south, but all seemed quiet. The twilight glow allowed her to see fairly well where she was going. As soon as she had left the outskirts of the village, she heard the clatter of Aríel’s hooves and her horse came running up. Laura gave her a hug and then said, “It’s good to see you, Aríel. I missed you today. Is everything okay? What’s going on?”

“I know exactly how you feel about the plan,” Aríel told her.

“I don’t want any horses to die, especially you. For the life of me, I can’t come up with any better ideas.”

“Well, we’re both brave and smart, aren’t we?” Aríel said stoutly. “I believe that if we leave right now we could catch Siklingur and his warriors off guard, sneak into his Great House and rescue Gígja.”

“Are you crazy?!” Laura cried, aghast. “That’s a very risky and dangerous move. I can’t believe you’re even here – can’t Prinsessa hear us? How’d you even get this far?”

“No, she can’t hear us,” Aríel replied, a little stung because Laura didn’t immediately embrace her plan with great enthusiasm. “I am using some of my own powers. I have been practicing. No one can hear us. Now, come on. No one is expecting this, so it’s a foolproof plan. Word has to have leaked out that Arnþor and all his warriors are planning something and were planning it only today. They won’t be expecting you at all, and that’s the best time, when everyone’s guard is down.
