SARAH ELLIS

One year earlier

I got off the wait list today, but only because Daddy called a friend of a friend at Windermere University. It’s a few weeks until classes start up and I hadn’t heard anything, which isn’t surprising, considering how I fucked up my senior year marks and only stand a chance at a decent college because I did well on the SATs. Anyway, this morning he said enough was enough and he was going to call in a favor, and I exploded. Clearly, I said, I didn’t deserve to be there, and I didn’t want to take anyone else’s spot, and then Daddy exploded, which he never does. He turned sunburned red and said what I deserve has nothing to do with anything, and I had made their lives miserable enough with the whole Duke thing, and I said I wanted to go to Windermere, so that’s where I was “going to fucking go.”

Three hours later, I got the email confirming my acceptance, and I spitefully forwarded it on to my parents and then switched off my phone. I was halfway to Cape Cod with my friends. The six of us are splitting up soon. Felix’s dad went to Harvard, so guess where Felix is going, and Journey got into Georgetown, where she’s wanted to go ever since she watched this old TV show I’d never heard of, The West Wing. (She’s also dated three guys over the last year to make Felix jealous, but the guy is too much of a stoner to even notice.) Journey and Felix are my oldest friends, and it’ll be weird not to see them every day, but at least I’ll be with Tommy, and also Nathan and Andrea. They’re staying in Windermere, too. It’s not Ivy League, but it’s rated pretty well these days. It’s rated well enough that my parents won’t consider me a total embarrassment.

Back to my day: Journey drove us down in her dad’s Escalade. Cape Cod was stupid busy, and we found a sliver of empty beach and hung out and smoked and made this funny TikTok for Journey’s new account. I’m not into posting there myself—I just have an anonymous account to watch TikToks when I’m bored—but I love Instagram and have admittedly gone a little crazy since we graduated and were allowed social media. So next, Journey, Andrea and I did that jumping thing in the waves while Nathan took photos for us with my new iPhone. We all agreed on who got to post which photo, and I know it’s superficial, but it’s so fun because it’s such a novelty.

Afterward, I wandered around the boardwalk looking for Tommy, who had disappeared during the photo shoot, but I couldn’t find him anywhere. When I got back to the beach, Journey, Felix and Andrea were in the water, and Nathan was chilling on his beach towel.

“Where’s Tommy?” I asked Nathan, sitting down next to him.

Nathan grunted a response, and I looked over to find him muttering under his breath.
