Kyla imagines the scent of freshly baked cookies wafting through the stairwell when she gets home from school. She imagines the apartment sparkling clean, taking Sunday drives to Santa Barbara and big brunches that last all afternoon. She can’t help but daydream about their new life after Mom meets Mr. Perfect. She’s also trying to forget that Elizabeth is sitting at a table out in front of the café. But it’s impossible. It feels as if there’s a laser beam running from Elizabeth’s body to hers.

Susanna and Therese won’t let up.

“But you have to hang out with your friends some of the time too,” Susanna says. “I mean, that’s just wrong, having to stay home with your mom all weekend. I couldn’t even deal with that!” Susanna’s whining is piercing.

Therese wrinkles her forehead and asks, “Kyla?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you mad at us or something?”

“Why would I be mad? Do I have some reason to be mad or something?”

“Nah, I just mean that you sounded mad,” Therese says. “When I called.”

Kyla sighs deeply. “We can’t hang out twenty-four/seven.” “You’re ditching us for that Lucas guy, right?”

“No, it’s my mom. I told you that.”

“Kylaaa!” Susanna moans. “What is so wrong with your mom?”

She says it so loudly that everyone hears. Elizabeth’s eyes meet Kyla’s for a fraction of a second, then Kyla looks back to Susanna. “Shhh!”

“Okay, sorry, but what is it?” Susanna continues in a heavy whisper. “I really don’t get it.”

“It’s nothing in particular.”

“Well, something must be wrong if you have to take care of her all the time!”

Out of the corner of her eye Kyla can see Elizabeth looking her way again. “Shut up!”

“What the hell? Just tell us!” Susanna whimpers. “We’re your friends, Kyla. It’s not as bad as cancer, is it?”

Knowing that Elizabeth is watching them is painful. Her look is hard and penetrating. Elizabeth saw, Elizabeth knows.

Kyla gets up and puts on her jacket. “No, it’s not cancer!” She’s too angry to keep her voice down. “Why did you have to . . . never mind. I can’t deal with you guys anymore!”
