Chapter Fourteen

Having River in his space was simply flat-out weird. And, okay, it would be weird to have just about anyone else in his little cabin, seeing as how he hadn’t had a guest beyond family members bringing food to the door since he’d moved in here. But it was especially weird having a person he liked here. Cared about even. And that was precisely his issue—he cared too much about River already, and now here he was caring about what he thought of Griffin’s space. The cabin seemed way too inadequate to hold them both plus all this charged energy between them.

“Let’s get you exploring,” he said, pulling away before River could steal another kiss.

“I wanna explore you.” River cast a longing look at Griffin’s bed.

And Griffin did want sex. Badly. But later. After he’d acclimated to having River around. Maybe it was his years of military training or something, but afternoon sex felt like the ultimate indulgence, lazing around in bed while the rest of the world worked. He wasn’t sure he could allow himself to enjoy that the way River deserved to be enjoyed.

“You will,” he promised. “And maybe it’s my turn to do the exploring.”

“Maybe.” River sounded strangely ambivalent at the prospect. Despite the variety of ways they’d rubbed off together and River blowing him, most of their encounters had been rather focused on Griff. Which was nice and all, but he wouldn’t mind getting better acquainted with River’s body, especially with the lights on this time. Despite all his reservations about timing, a familiar thrum of arousal started, and he headed for the door before it could take hold.

“Come on. Grab your camera. You ever ride an ATV?”

“I’ve seen them before.” Sighing like Griffin was the meanest guy in the world, withholding sex, River followed him out to the porch and put on his boots before tossing his camera bag on, cross-body style. “And I’ve been on the back of a motorcycle.”

“Good. Same basic principle. Hold on tight and don’t distract the driver.” He led the way to the shed that housed their ATVs and selected a two-up quad that easily held two riders.

“I don’t get to drive one?” Apparently over the lack of sex, River bounced on the balls of his feet.

“Maybe tomorrow. Ride with me this time, get a feel for how they handle, and then we’ll see.”

“Oh, okay. Holding on to you is hardly a hardship.” River accepted the helmet that Griffin offered him, putting it on and nimbly climbing onto the back of the ATV. While plenty of Griffin’s friends rode helmet-free, losing two different high school friends to ATV fatalities had made Griffin always insist on them. Strapping on his own helmet, Griffin took the driver’s position, starting up the vehicle.

“I’m going to take you on a tour of the property, then we’re headed into the forest. Last part will be on foot, but the view is more than worth it.”

“I’m game.” River held him closer than strictly necessary, but Griffin wasn’t going to complain.
