.Chapter Eight.

Den of the Yokai

Rhodes and Luca were stronger the next morning, but by the looks of it, they’d yet to reach their peak levels. The stoneshaper was easily winded and Luca kept having to sit down, the galecaller less chipper than she normally was. Because there weren’t seats, and Rhodes didn’t want to use power to create some, this meant Luca had to sit on the forest floor while they waited for Waltham’s yokai to come to them and deliver their verdict…

“You can sit on my robes, Windscourge,” he told her at some point. “I can remove the top half.”

“I’m fine.”

“The ground is cold. We don’t need you catching a cold as well.”

“Then make me a chair.”

Rhodes lifted a hand and the soil and roots moved. He tried again, his face twisting in concentration. But he wasn’t able to pull it off in the end. “I’m still too low. My dragonessence levels are under five. Yours?”

“Around the same.”

“Sucks to be us.” He plopped down next to Luca and the two ended up leaning against one another.

“What do you think the yokai’s verdict will be?” Luca asked as Jaden returned the pocket shelter to his bag. “I’m hoping we’re in the clear. I don’t see why we wouldn’t be.”

“I don’t know either, but the longer we have to wait, the more anxious I become.”

Bota made a sound with his throat. We’re at the mercy of forest pets, great.

“Try to be respectful around them,” Jaden said as he approached the sunstrider camel and placed his hand on the side of his neck. “This is their territory.”

Fine.

“I’m serious, try.”

I said fine. What else do you want me to say?

Movement ahead caught their attention. Jaden nearly activated his dragonaura, but stopped himself as the two white foxes he’d seen last night hopped out of the thicket, their bodies covered in bits of snow. As he had noticed before, the tips of their tails glowed with various colors.

“Where did you come from?” Kae asked. While there had been snow in Folke, they had yet to encounter any in the forest.

“Ah, the snow,” said the fox on the right in a feminine voice. “It snowed last night over our sanctuary.”

“How long will it take us to get there?” Jaden asked.

“An hour, but the distance is much greater. You’ll see. I am Emelia, this is Suntaro.” She nodded to her counterpart. “My brother.”

Suntaro nodded, but didn’t say anything.

“Are you all ready?” Emelia asked.

“I guess,” Rhodes said. “Just promise me we’re not going to have to fight anything.”

“I can’t make that promise.”

They joined the foxes, and soon, the trees were parting as they had before, when the sect had been tricked by one of the heads. As they walked, Kae kept to the back with Luca and Rhodes, which allowed Jaden and Bota to join the foxes at the front.

You might as well tell us your verdict, the camel told Emelia.

“It isn’t for us to explain what we have decided.”

Why? We’re already screwed by simply being in this forest.
