Chapter Eleven

My hopes of sneaking in on foot faded more with every step I took toward the gate. The trees and brush out here were thick, so I couldn’t see much. But what I could see was that there was a giant electric fence surrounding this property. Warning signs were posted every few feet, assuring me that I would be jolted from here to infinity if I dared try to make it past the fence.

As I continued to creep along, I couldn’t find any gaps wide enough for me to slip through. I kept walking, keeping a careful eye out so that if any video cameras were around I would spot them. I didn’t see any cameras except for one on the keypad in front of the gate. I wasn’t going to go anywhere near that keypad. I had no hope of guessing whatever the access code was, and I wasn’t interested in giving Bruce a mug shot of me. I didn’t want him to know I’d found his secret lair.

I shivered, and it wasn’t just because the October night was cool. The very air around me felt sinister. What was waiting beyond that fence? A monkey costume? A murder weapon?

I had a feeling that something in there was related to Big Al’s murder, although there must have been more beyond that gate than just a monkey suit and murder weapon. What did Bruce have in there that he needed to keep so secret? And had Big Al discovered it?

I’d thought all along that the food poisoning incident wasn’t truly a strong enough motivation for Bruce to kill Big Al, even though I supposed people were killed for lesser reasons every day. But if Bruce was hiding something else in here that Big Al had discovered, maybe Bruce had needed to keep him silent.

My phone buzzed in my pocket, nearly causing me to shriek in surprise. I caught myself just in time, and reached down to turn the ringer from vibrate to silent. Thankfully, it had at least been on vibrate instead of having the ringer turned up. In the stillness out here, Bruce would surely have heard a ringtone.

I glanced down at the message I’d just received and saw that it was from Grams, asking if I was going to come by and get Sprinkles, or whether he could spend the night with her. With a sigh, I texted to tell her I’d come get him the next day after work. I would have liked to have had him with me at that very moment, but I’d had to leave him behind tonight for obvious reasons. As much as I thought he’d fit in just fine at the Spicy Grape, not everyone agreed with me that dogs should be allowed in fine dining establishments.

I continued to walk up and down the fence for about fifteen minutes, but as I’d feared, there were no openings. I decided at last to give up and head back to my car. I’d tell Mitch about this place and he could get a warrant to come search it.
