Chapter 7 – Settling In

Andi startled awake in the middle of the night to find Jake thrashing in his sleep. He had pulled the covers off of her and she could hear him muttering in a plaintive voice.

“Why, Shelly?”

“Too long, Shelly.”

“Forgive me.”

Andi grabbed the covers and pulled them back over herself. Then she slid across the bed until her back was flush with Jake's. The touch of her flesh seemed to calm him and he settled down. She fell asleep moments later.

Andi woke in the morning to find that Jake was already out of bed. She stretched luxuriously, a night in a real bed having done wonders for the stiffness of her muscles. She rotated her head, trying to relieve the stiffness in her neck, and saw the corner of a photograph sticking out from under Jake's pillow.

She picked the crumpled photo up, glanced at it, and several things became clear to her. The picture was of Jake and a woman. As she looked at the picture she noted the similarities between her own looks and those of the woman in the photograph. She and the unknown woman didn't look like twins but they could easily have been mistaken for sisters.

Andi flipped the photo over to find two inscriptions, in different handwriting. The first read:

Jake and Michelle with a date that was almost three years earlier.

The second read:

Jake:

All my love forever.

Shelly

Suddenly the haunted and wistful looks she'd seen on Jake's face made a great deal more sense. She thought he might be seeing her as Shelly when that occurred. Maybe when it happened he was just wishing that she actually was Shelly instead. She couldn't tell without asking and she wasn't about to do that. She didn't know if this was a good thing or a bad thing. If he grew resentful of her due to the resemblance, she didn't know what might happen. At least she knew about it now and if a problem arose because of it, she'd have a better chance to head it off.

Andi slid the photo back under his pillow and got out of bed. She dressed in her own clothes, despite their ragged condition, and left the bedroom. She looked in the living room and the kitchen but didn't find Jake.

She did find a covered bowl atop the wood stove in the kitchen. It was being kept company by a large metal teapot. The stove was still radiating a touch of heat when she approached and she figured that these were left here to stay warm for her. She lifted the lid on the bowl and found that it was full of oatmeal. Sniffing the spout of the teapot gave her a strong scent of mint and the faint scent of apples.

A single spoon sat on the table, along with an empty cup, so she appropriated the bowl and poured herself a cup of whatever was in the teapot. She sat down and ate the oatmeal, accompanying it with the tea. They were both still warm from being left on the stove.
