Chapter Eighteen

Antonio

I woke to someone shaking me. Slowly opening my eyes, I looked at my brother Salvatore. He looked tired, upset even. Slowly sitting up, I looked over at my wife to ensure she was covered before I whispered, “What’s wrong?”

“Get dressed. There’s a problem.”

Doing as he said, I quickly threw on some sweat bottoms and grabbed my t-shirt laying at the foot of the bed. Following him out of my bedroom, I carefully closed the door, spotting my wife as she curled around my pillow.

“What’s going on?”

“There’s a phone call for you.”

“Who?”

“A woman named Agatha Miles. Suzanna is talking with her now.”

Moving quickly down the hall, I wondered what the hell was going on? I knew that Agatha’s son Jerome was taken into custody and was turned over to the Juvenile Detention Center just outside of Chicago, where he would be staying until he turned eighteen, then he would be remanded over to the state until he turned twenty-one. It was a messed-up system all around. Kids were never the same after spending time in jail, especially a state-run prison. If I hadn’t lost my temper and done my job correctly, Jerome would have been with his mother, where he belonged. It was another thing I was going to have to atone for.

“Suzanna?”

My frazzled partner quickly told Mrs. Miles to hold before she covered the speaker of the phone. “We’ve got a problem. Jerome never made it to the Juvenile Detention Center and I just learned that the Chicago police picked up my client, Malesia Morales. Mrs. Miles went to the detention center today to see her son and was told he wasn’t there.”

“What do you mean? You said that Deveroux was taking care of everything.”

“He is. He called and said the Detention Center has no record of Jerome Miles or Malesia Morales. Also, Deveroux informed me that three more kids that other attorneys are representing have gone missing too. No one knows where these kids are. Deveroux is meeting with the other attorneys in an hour to collaborate.”

“It’s got to be Bianchi,” Salvatore said, sitting down in one of the chairs as the rest of my brothers walked into the dining room that was converted into an office for my legal team and me.

“What’s wrong?” Luciano asked rubbing his face.

“Kids are missing,” Sal said as I took the phone from Suzanna.

“Mrs. Miles, it’s Antonio. Tell me what happened.”

For the next twenty minutes I listened as Jerome’s mother explained everything. She was distraught and rightfully so. This was her only child and not where he was. It was every parent’s worst nightmare. I refused to think about what I would feel if it were my daughter. I couldn’t. I’d lose my mind.

After calming Mrs. Miles down, I told her what I could, knowing to use my words carefully. I refused to promise this kind woman something I couldn’t deliver. When I hung up the phone, I turned to Suzanna as she said, “Already on it. I’ve already put in calls to a few judges and told them what is going on.
