I took an interest in attending trials, especially those in the courts of Julianus and Priscus, whenever I happened to find myself in the city and with free time. I made it a point to take several afternoons to spend time with Critoneo, as we had not seen each other in the months since I had left the paedagogium. He had followed my steady rise to prominence and obviously enjoyed the part he had played. It was in these discussions with him that I came to learn just how carefully and with crucial intent my grooming had been directed.
