AFTER HIS GUEST had departed, Martel threw another two logs on the fire, wrapped an old army blanket around his legs, and nursed a glass of cognac. It had been so long since he had thought about the office and Landrou and Michel and Mlle Jacqueline Souchère. Had Lt.-Col. Michel really fallen in love with her, a German spy?

He had been a kind of silent witness through the spring and summer of 1939. Landrou had ordered Michel to see a lot of Souchère, to win her confidence, as the first step to penetrating Loriot’s spy ring. Michel had obeyed, with mixed feelings. He had told Martel that Souchère was a real stunner and had laughed about how he got all the hard assignments. But before long, the sergeant had sensed the colonel’s discomfort. Michel had begun to question whether she could know about Loriot’s operations and, on those occasions when he seemed sure of her guilt, he also speculated about her motives. Perhaps, he wondered to Martel, she had been forced into treason.

He had seen them once, purely by chance, on the Champs de Mars, almost up to the École Militaire. Not up close, but close enough to have seen them hand in hand, close enough to have seen them kiss. He had said to himself, “I sure hope the colonel knows what he’s doin’, ’cause this little lady could be usin’ him.” He had even thought of saying something to Michel the next day, but had decided to keep his mouth shut.

“Maybe I should’a warned the colonel,” he thought to himself, as he refuelled the fire with a log and himself with more brandy.
