After saying good-night to Ao, I entered the house using the key I had found in Annabel’s room earlier today.
“Annabel, you’re back, I was getting a little worried,” Franny said the moment she saw me. “Mr. Wrights phoned. Said he won’t be home until much later. You want dinner?”
I nodded. “Yes, please. How about you join me?”
Franny chuckled. “Why not?”
The two of us settled down for dinner after I had put my things away, and I must admit that it was a pleasant meal, with Franny chatting mostly about her knitting and what she had made in the past. Apparently, she was currently working on a wooly hat, which was meant for me. She even fetched it to show me. It had a lovely pink-and-white-colored yarn. She told me it’d have pompoms at the top, to which I felt the need to exclaim that it’d be beautiful.
When we finished, I helped her with the dishes, and once the kitchen was nice and clean, I headed upstairs. After locking the bedroom door, I started going through the files Annabel had sent me. I was so consumed with my readings, which was of Annabel’s schoolwork and the information and data about Brooksworth Academy itself, that when a few knocks came at the door, I jolted in surprise.
I raised my head and asked, “Who is it?”
“It’s me, Malcolm.”
Shit! I tapped on my smartphone to check the time, noting that it was nearly eleven o’clock. Had Franny gone home yet? I wondered.
I rushed over to the bed, pulled the duvet off it, and then blanketed it over the piles of files on the floor. Done, I went to the door, unlocked it, and peeked out.
Malcolm was waiting for me along the corridor, and the moment he saw me, he said, “Can we talk for a minute?”
I nodded.
“Come downstairs.”
“Okay,” I said, and once he was out of sight, I slipped out and closed the door behind me.
I met him in the living room, and noted Franny was there as well, sitting on a comfy chair and knitting the wooly hat. The woman gave me a grin, and I returned the smile.
“What do you want to talk to me about?” I asked Malcolm.
“You’ve met Franny Smith, right?” he began.
I nodded. “When I got home this afternoon.”
“She’ll be staying here with you from now on until further notice.”
“I see,” I said. “Franny is a live-in housekeeper?”
Malcolm nodded. “I’m going to be away for a while.”
That was unexpected.
“Franny will be looking after the house and you,” he said. “Do you have any objection to that?”
I shook my head in the negative.
“I’ll be leaving first thing tomorrow morning and—”
“What about Mom?” I asked. “Will the doctor be contacting you if something happens?”
Like if Mom wakes up.
He nodded.
And yet, he’ll be away? When Mom was in a coma in the hospital. Some loving partner this guy was.
“How long are you going to be away?” I couldn’t help asking.
“A couple of weeks, but it’s not clear yet how long it’ll take to complete this.
