Chapter Twelve

“Xavi was right,” Guy said, forking up the last of his steak. “The food here is amazing.”

Mason looked around the half-empty room, reminding himself the lack of diners was no reflection on the quality of the food. Xavi had told him most Spaniards didn’t even think about eating dinner before nine in the evening, having taken a siesta when the fierce heat of the afternoon made it impossible for them to go about their business. Still, it meant they’d had no difficulty getting a table. In Manhattan, a place like El Gato Gordo would have been booked out for weeks in advance, and meals would have cost three times the price.

Sitting in the restaurant’s candlelit interior, it was almost possible for him to believe that Nora was still with them and had only stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. Everything seemed so normal. PJ telling one of his anecdotes about a book he’d worked on, Scott loosely clasping Allison’s fingers as their hands rested on the starched white tablecloth, the waiter bending to refill Mason’s wineglass. But thoughts of everything that had happened the day before—the discovery of Nora’s lifeless body in the pool, the visit of the police officers with their polite insinuations—still hovered at the edge of his mind.

Pushing them away, he cast a glance at Guy. A couple of days out in the sun had turned the tip of the young editorial assistant’s nose and his cheekbones pink, and given the freckles that dotted his face and forearms an odd greenish hue. But he looked relaxed, almost as if Nora’s death hadn’t disturbed him. Mason doubted that was the case. Guy was probably just one of those people who’d learned to disguise their true emotions—something Mason had never quite mastered.

“Is PJ still checking his emails at every possible opportunity?” Mason asked.

Guy nodded. “I keep telling him he’s on vacation but he doesn’t want to listen. He thinks the editorial department will fall apart without him around to micromanage it.”

“So how do you like working for Dade and Nicholson?” It occurred to Mason this was probably the longest time he’d ever spent talking to Guy on a one-to-one basis. They’d had email conversations, but those were always work-related, and whenever Mason stopped by the publishing company’s offices, he usually just said a brief hello to Guy before going into a meeting with PJ.

“It’s good. I feel like I’m learning a lot.” Guy slurped from his wineglass. “When I took the job, people kept telling me that traditional book publishing was on the way out, and that everything will be done digitally in future, but I don’t see that. I think there’s room for both to coexist, you know?”

“Yeah.” Mason smiled at Guy’s obvious enthusiasm. “I might complain about the number of signings I have to do, but people just love having a copy of the book with my John Hancock in it. I couldn’t really do that with an e-book. And things always mean so much more when you do them face-to-face, at least in my opinion.
