Chapter Twelve

There was no hurry in finding Julian a husband. She needed to learn about being female first. Angus shook his head. For the last four days she’d acted as though it was his fault she was stuck in bed. All she did was sew. Every time he stepped in to check on her, there she was with all that fabric scattered about her, needle in hand. And he didn’t tell her it didn’t look like any dress he’d seen before.

Rafferty wasn’t talking to him. Did Rafferty care for Julian? Why else would he be mad? It was a situation he’d need to monitor. All the Julian worries had taken up all his free time. Her pa had done a good job raising a boy. Didn’t he think she’d need to know how to run a household? An intriguing thought entered his mind. Maybe he needed to send her to finishing school?

He saddled Captain and rode into town. He needed a solution; he just wasn’t sure what it was going to look like. After the relatively short ride, he pulled up at just the place he might find that solution and got off Captain. Then he tied the reins round the hitching post in front of the general store and went in.

The place was full of women, and that was what he needed, feminine advice. He stood and watched for a moment before he approached Mrs. Hutton. “Good Morning.”

She turned and smiled. “Angus, how are you?”

“I’m well.” He shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “Fact is, I need some advice. You’ve raised four well-mannered daughters.”

“Yes, I have.” Mrs. Hutton blushed.

“I need to find someone to teach my ward how to act proper.”

Her eyes lit up. “Oh, I know just the person for you. Miss Cabot is the one you need. Fine manners, very fine manners, indeed. I’ve recommended her to everyone. She lives here in town. You know the house with all the roses in front? She lives there.” Her lips curved into a pleasing smile. “Best of luck to you and your ward, Angus.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Hutton. I’ll be heading over to see Miss Cabot now.”

He walked out of the store wondering why Mrs. Hutton had asked nothing about his ward. True, she’d attended church with the family, and revealing she was female instead of the boy he’d thought had raised some eyebrows. But Mrs. Hutton had behaved as though she had no questions, which was very unlike her. That was another thing he wanted Julian to learn, not to gossip.

He met with Miss Cabot, and they agreed to terms. He would send a buggy for her this afternoon. She looked like a schoolteacher. Hair pulled back so severely it was almost as though she hadn’t any. She was tall and reed thin. She also wore glasses. She seemed to be a no-nonsense type of woman. Just what Julian needed.

He smiled all the way home. He was proud to make the right choices for Julian. He couldn’t wait to tell her.
