Chapter 16
The BCA agents watched the sheriff walk back to the house. Doc said to LeBlanc, “I got to call Trask.”
Doc called and got Trask’s assistant, Larry Stoxen.
“Larry. It’s Doc. Is he ducking calls again?”
“Very perceptive of you, Agent. The superintendent is trying to schedule a budget meeting. I’ll put your call through.”
After a moment, Trask came on the line.
“I got two more,” said Doc, “and one is the county attorney. Pickus is calling it a rampage, and I’m starting to agree with him.”
“Jeez! The county attorney? That’s almost as bad as shooting a cop.”
“Almost.”
“The media is going to be all over you now,” said Trask. “So, when are you going to nail this guy?”
“I wish I knew. Someone’s mighty angry about something.”
“You know what that something is?”
“I’m pretty sure it was the Rose kid getting away with the rapes that triggered things, so that means parents and families of the girls, and maybe boyfriends, and I’m working my way through the list,” said Doc. “But the kid may have assaulted a lot more than just the two that filed complaints. I know of at least one other girl he tried to go after, and the father was not happy about it.”
“You think it’s a single shooter?”
“Yeah, too neat to be more. The killings are too much alike. And it doesn’t look like there have been any robberies.”
“You’re not still on the hitman thing, are you?” said Trask.
“Can’t rule it out. The guy’s a good shot.”
“OK, well, I don’t know what I can do except to yell at you to hurry up and catch him,” said Trask.
“You can do one thing,” said Doc. “I’m not sure it’s related, but it may be. Can you have the fraud guys check out an Ed Salo here? He runs the co-op. He’s the parent with the daughter who Blake Rose tried to go after.”
“OK, but what are they looking for?”
“The guy has a zoo full of animals in his basement that he shot. I’m talking lions and tigers and bears, oh my. From what I can find, there’s no way a guy running a co-op makes anywhere near enough to do that.”
“Fine. But don’t call me again unless it’s to tell me you nailed this guy,” said Trask. “I’m busy.”
“I heard,” said Doc, and Trask was gone. Doc turned to LeBlanc. “Let’s go eat.”
