CHAPTER 22

Angela’s phone binged with a text.

Hi, Matt’s appointment tomorrow is at eight-thirty. How about going to the beach with us after? You have a way of cheering him up.

Love to. Pick me up at my house? What time?

Don’t know how long the doc will take. Let’s go with 10:30 unless you hear from me.

She texted back a happy face emoji and smiled as she put her phone in her pocket.

Rachel, the all-around Girl Friday receptionist, clucked and said, “Don’t you look happy? Got a date with Mr. Cutie?”

Angela lifted her eyebrows and said, “Who are you talking about?”

“James Ross, silly. You guys are dating, aren’t you?”

Angela thought for a moment and realized that, yes, she guessed they were. “Where did you hear that?”

In a sing-song voice, Rachel said, “It’s common knowledge. Everybody knows.”

“Yes,” Angela said, pushing open the door to the lab, “we are.” She felt like she used to in high school, although the only boy she had ever dated back then was Dean, and she never invited the few girlfriends she had to her house.

She considered herself friendly but guarded and was trying to let more people in, but it wasn’t easy. Any relationships she’d had in the past were superficial, like the one with Greg.

“Wahoo,” Rachel pumped her arm up and down. “He seems like a really nice guy, and he’s easy on the eyes.”

“Yes, he’s both of those things,” Angela said, while suppressing a smile.

They both heard a ding signaling the front door opening and Rachel rushed out as Angela prepared for another emergency. The owner of a muscular Rottweiler suspected the animal had eaten something poisonous. Angela induced vomiting, administered medication to reduce the symptoms, and placed the big dog on an IV to flush out all the toxins from his system. They would hydrate him, keep him overnight, and probably send him home the next day.

Angela pushed her hair back and sat down at her computer to log into the dog’s chart. When her phone buzzed with a text again, her heart skipped a beat when she read the message from Jimmy.

Can you take a break?
