The wolf bounded along the river. The current carried chunks of ice as rapidly as she ran, her paws landing on the torn rubble as she leaped over a part of a wall that had crashed down.

The wolf’s fur was wet, chunks of snow still falling out of it as she raced against the biting wind. The sky was overcast, and snow was still falling in gentle flakes. The debris of what had once been a street caused her difficulty in getting through.

Mary, in the wolf’s body, splashed through a puddle that was a mixture of oil, melted snow, and blood. Fresh blood. The buildings were sprayed with it. The chunks of concrete were painted with it. The river rushed on, and so did the wind, and so did she.

She skidded past protruding barbed wire and ducked into one of the houses that had not collapsed or gone up in flames. Chaos reigned outside. Far-off screams reached her perked ears. She could see them now: women and children in little clothing running as fast as they could. If they weren’t killed by the soldiers, they would soon be killed by cold and hunger.

Even Mary, in a wolf’s body, could find little food in this city.

Across from her, at the corner of a building, stood a domesticated dog whose ribs showed distinctly.

Time to go, she told herself. She had ducked into the building to escape the soldiers who had chased her. Why they thought going after a wolf was important to their fight, Mary did not know. Did they somehow know what she intended? They couldn’t; she was certain of that. Eyeing the dog once more, she realized something about herself. She towered over it.

I am no ordinary-sized wolf, Mary thought. The dog did not seem to fear her. She doubted he feared anything anymore. He was almost dead. The winter would kill him in no time. It’ll kill me too if I don’t get the hell out.

She left the house, knowing that it too would soon collapse.

Night had arrived, making the icy streets harder for any human to see, but she was in a wolf’s body. The moon shone overhead, granting its guidance to her as she made her way around the rubble and through a tunnel. The tremendous crash of a warehouse imploding came from nearby. She shuddered and kept running.

Her muscles burned as she ran, but she savored the feeling. I am powerful enough to do this. I am strong enough to finish, she thought. The man, her enemy, had said, “I could storm the heavens.”

No, she thought. I will storm the heavens. I know things he never will.

Mary bounded out of the tunnel, thankful to find a dry part of the street where her paws didn’t slide across the ice. Don’t lose yourself in it, she told herself. Don’t lose who you are to your power. After she was finished here, there would be more to do.

Mary realized she was in the center of the enemy’s division. A gun fired from a window high above her, followed by another.
