Chapter 8

Dom noticed our tightly clasped hands, and his face tightened. His gaze roamed over me with a critical eye before settling on Creed. His brows dipped together, and he frowned. “What happened to the cut on your lip? I thought Sonny hit you pretty hard, but it looks like nothing happened.”

“He put some ice on it,” I said. “And the cut is on the inside of his mouth, so it doesn’t show.”

Dom turned to me, his icy stare sending shivers down my spine. With a haughty nod, he motioned us toward the elevator, waiting to follow us inside.

In the cramped space, Creed squeezed my hand, holding it tightly, all the way down to the main floor, and bolstering my courage. We stepped out into the crowded lobby, and Dom led the way to a large room, just for playing poker.

I counted twelve oblong poker tables, each fitted with golden felt and sitting below spotlight lampshades, which emitted low levels of filtered light. Each table was surrounded by ten deep, velvet-backed chairs, with the dealer’s chair in the middle to round out the seating arrangement.

Spectator seating was sparse around the outer edges of the room, but the chairs were plush and comfortable-looking.

Dom directed Creed to the guest services desk to check in, and I trailed along behind. At the desk, Creed found his name and signed the paper. They gave him his assignment at table number twelve. As he stepped away, he took my hand again, offering me comfort.

Most of the players were already seated at their tables, but Creed put it off until the last minute. The final call came for the players to take their seats, and Creed turned to me. “A kiss for luck?”

I smiled and nodded. He leaned in for a tender kiss before heading to his table. As Creed took his seat, Sonny began to speak into a microphone at the front of the room. “Welcome to the first winner-take-all Mojavi Casino Poker Tournament, with the largest jackpot on record of ten million dollars.

“You should have all registered and received your table assignments. Please note that all regular Texas Hold’em poker tournament rules will apply. There will be short breaks between rounds as needed. Anyone who doesn’t play by our previously agreed set of rules will be escorted from the room without compensation. That includes cheating of any kind. For that purpose, monitors will be watching throughout the tournament.

“After the first round, the winners of each table will have a dinner break of forty-five minutes. You will then be assigned to one of two tables for the second round. The two winners from the second round will then face off for the chance to win the ten-million-dollar jackpot.”

Sonny paused, looking over the room. “Are you ready?” Several people clapped, and a few whistled, bringing a big smile to Sonny’s face. “Dealers, take your places.” The dealers filed to their respective tables, each wearing white shirts, black pants, and golden vests.

“Monitors come forward.” Six people, wearing the same clothing as the dealers, took their designated positions throughout the room.
