Killian

Groaning, I roll over in bed, checking the clock for the hundredth time since I laid down. 4:22 AM. I've been lying here for a solid four hours now, tossing and turning like sleep will never find me. Sighing in defeat, I throw the covers off and slip out of bed to go find her.

It's not like Ainsley would be anywhere else. She's been avoiding me after she sucked me off in the janitor’s closet. And she's been slowly stretching out the supply of oxy that she got from Ezra, making it last as long as she can. I don't know how she's doing it and I know she doesn't want anyone to know, but I'm not fucking blind.

I grew up in a goddamn drug house after all with a junkie mom. I've taken enough drugs and been around it enough to know the telltale signs. Ainsley's eyes say it all. And her blank fucking stares and her flat affect are dead giveaways. She's a walking, talking, barely-functioning corpse.

I don't like it at all.

Her room is dark, with only the moonlight shining through her window, casting a silvery glow across the floor. She has a TV in her room, but I've never seen it on or heard anything playing on it. The only noise that ever comes from Ainsley's room is the steady thumping of the bass of whatever song she's listening to.

When I was a kid, there was a point in my life where we didn't have electricity. Come to think of it, it happened more often than I ever thought I would have to admit. At first, it scared me. I mean, it's not untypical for a child to be afraid of the dark.

And then I realized how much scarier it is during the daytime, when the light was shining brightly through our windows. In the darkness of the night, all of the ugly things hid in the shadows. As long as I was in the dark, I was safe. No one could hurt me there. No one could hurt my mother. We just existed.

My eyes adjust as I softly shut the door behind me. I was surprised the first time that I snuck in here to check on Ainsley. I thought it was because she was fucked up, she forgot her nightlight or whatever the hell people use to keep the boogeyman away. And then I realized that her room is always dark—just as dark as mine.

Ainsley isn't afraid of what hides in the darkness of the night because that's somewhere that she doesn't have to hide.

I get it, I get her, but it can't be that way.

In another universe, we would make complete sense. We would be perfect for each other.

In any universe but this one.

My footsteps are light on the carpeted floor as I make my way over to her bed. I never stay this long. Usually, I just do a quick check and slip back out of the room, but not tonight. Everything has changed now.
