Just decades after the Siege of Syracuse, the Greeks were devising a variety of war engines for both defensive and offensive purposes. The hovering ram was one of the first weapons designed for directly assaulting the walls of a city. It was relatively simple in construction, consisting of a metal-capped beam suspended in a frame that was drawn on wheels. The suspension allowed the beam to be thrust against a stone structure at different angles, the better to exploit weaknesses. The advantage of this machine was that it was relatively light and easy to move. On the other hand, however, it was unprotected from missile attacks and incendiary weapons such as burning pitch.
