Chapter Twenty-Two

“Miles, you can’t be serious.” Amaliya sat in the car beside him and looked out the window at the ball field.

“Sure I can.” Miles turned the engine off. “I’m not letting some boy drive you home until I’ve met him. Which one is he anyway?”

Amaliya scanned the field. When Jeff had asked her to come, she’d been so shocked she hadn’t thought to ask him his position. “That’s him at second base.”

“You know, I played baseball as a kid.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. I can’t throw worth a darn.” He climbed out.

“Miles, they’re already warming up. I can’t exactly pull him off the field to meet you.”

“That’s okay. I’ll stay and watch the game with you, and you can introduce me to him afterward.”

“You aren’t going to give up on this, are you?”

“Nope.”

“Fine, but can you promise not to embarrass me?”

“Where’s the fun in that?”

She stepped beside him. “Are you having fun playing the protective father?”

“As a matter of fact, I am.”

Amaliya couldn’t help but laugh. “I hate to admit it, but I think my dad would approve.”

“We should have broken him out of the hospital so he could come too.” Mile started forward. “What do you say? Should we sit front and center so I can yell at the umpire?”

“No. That’s taking embarrassing me way too far.”

“Fine. You can pick our seats.”

Amaliya scanned the bleachers and led the way to an open spot at the top. She sat, and Miles settled beside her.

“Could you have gotten any farther away?”

“We’ll have a great view from up here.”

“You know I’m a hockey coach, and I can be loud.”

“I also know where you’re hiding those Oreos Aunt Linda doesn’t want you eating.”

“You are your father’s daughter.” Miles leaned against the back of the bleachers. “When does this game start anyway?”

“Any minute.”
