Chapter Twelve

Later, Trorm would not be able to recall exactly how he’d done it. The spell had simply come to him in a moment of clarity. With a bellowed word and a gesture, he cast the spell of unseen binding, creating a link between the wrist of his offhand and the wall of the parking garage rushing by him.

His shoulder gave a sickening pop as the invisible bond went taut and nearly ripped his arm from his body. The momentum of his fall swung Trorm inward and he barely managed to get his feet up in time to keep from shattering his knees on the concrete barrier of a lower level. Trorm banished the binding spell and flew into the lower level of the parking garage.

His shield spell, which was miraculously still active, caught the ground as he struck it and he slid down the ramp at breakneck speed toward the exit. After Trixiel had once destroyed the floor beneath him as a means of getting around his shield, Trorm had modified his favorite spell to shield him against such things. His forethought paid off. Without it, the impact more than likely would have killed him.

Trorm came to a stop in the middle of the street.

He heard shouting. Footsteps. The gangsters were coming for him.

A roar drew his attention and he turned his head to find the draco-truck barreling down the street of its own accord, all three heads roaring. Several gangsters rushed out of the parking garage, guns and magic items at the ready. The draco-truck opened one of its mouths and bathed them in a torrent of fire.

They fell back screaming, shadows lost inside the flames engulfing them.

The draco-truck slammed to a truck between Trorm and the burning gangsters and its door flew open. Trorm tried to get up and fell over. He hurt. Everything hurt. So badly. He grunted and crawled, dragging his burned and shot body across the pavement and up into the truck.

The draco-truck was driving before he’d fully pulled himself inside, racing down the street as the sound of gunfire roared behind them. They rounded a corner and the door slammed shut behind Trorm as momentum shoved him more inside. Blood smeared over the seats.

“That’s going to take forever to get out,” he said stupidly. The world was spinning and didn’t hurt so much anymore. Was that a good sign or a bad sign.

Assume the worst he decided, though what that actually meant for him to do, he had no idea. His phone was suddenly in his hand. When had it gotten there? Didn’t matter. He knew who he was supposed to go to when he had questions.

“Mr. Coldstorm,” Cherry Tempest said, sounding pleasantly surprised. “Two calls so close together. People will talk.”

Trorm opened his mouth but no words came out.

“Mr. Coldstorm?” she asked.

The phone slipped from his hand to fall to the floorboards. Cherry’s voice sounded in the distance, tiny and full of static. The world spun faster and then went black.
