FIFTEEN

A sharp pain vibrated through my shoulder and I immediately slid out of the timeline. A whine slipped from my odd-feeling lips.

“Get up.” Daeli’s voice was hard. I shook my head, and my movements felt slower, wider, than they should’ve. Surging to my feet, I stumbled over my four hooves.

Four…

Hooves…

Shit.

I should’ve spent more time learning how to work my unicorn body instead of having sex with Serb. But damn, the sex was good.

The sun glowed brightly overhead but no heat came from it. It had been the middle of the night when I fell asleep, so Daeli hadn’t let me snooze long. That was a good thing, because I needed to get the unicorns matched so I could somehow manage to free my man and get to Balance.

My mind went back to Serberus, my gaze catching on the unicorns in front of me and the icy pavilion around me. There wasn’t time to learn my unicorn form. Serb was in trouble, and the only way to free him was to paint more damn futures.

“Shift,” Daeli barked the order. I glanced over at her and found her holding something that looked suspiciously similar to a taser.

I closed my eyes and remembered my human body. The change was nearly instant, and I stood on two legs, a massive yawn stretching my cheeks.

“You’ll sleep four hours a night from now on.” Daeli lowered her taser.

I would’ve argued, but Jeff needed me, and my body apparently couldn’t handle the lack of sleep. It must’ve physically rested somehow while my mind was in the timeline.

“Fine.” I strode to the table. “Get me some clothes.”

I didn’t mind painting naked, or even the eyes of the unicorns and their matches on my skin. But I knew Serberus wouldn’t like it, so I’d wear clothes for the sake of his comfort—even if he wasn’t with me.

She spoke to one of the other unicorns, and someone brought me a bodysuit that looked exactly like the ones I had in my closet at the castle. I hoped they’d actually gone in, because then there was a chance one of the hellhounds would smell a foreign unicorn and come after me and Serb. Eph would be with them whenever they came after us, but we’d foolishly left him at the castle when we went to change fates, and as far as I knew, he couldn’t track me or anything.

I dressed quickly and began matching and painting. I was getting a bit faster, the more I did it. Mostly because I cared less about how the unicorns’ futures turned out. As long as they weren’t going to start a war or attack my hellhound, I painted the unicorn and her chosen match together.

The sun went down, and darkness reigned as I continued to match the unicorns. I trusted my hellhound would survive his time in the ice castle; he was really damn strong. And he’d likely been through worse than what they were doing—which sounded like restraining him, and not much else.
