“Do we really want an exiled, savage bear running our den?” Carron screamed from the council table as Graham was half dragged into the hall.

One arm over Airan’s shoulder and the other over Hank’s, he made his way through the center of the chaotic crowd. In one hand, he held the stone totems, ready to use the tiny bit of proof as his weapon. He was too weak to do much more. As soon as he was close to the podium, he let out as massive of a roar as he could.

The crowd quieted. He stared around the room, stopping at Carron. “We have an alpha. A strong alpha. Declan.”

“An aggressive attacker. A murderer!” Carron cried. “He murdered my son.”

“He defended his father’s honor!” Magnus roared from the front.

“My son won the match. There was nothing to defend.”

“Traylon cheated. If Oberon hadn’t jumped in, Traylon wouldn’t have won the match. Declan had every right to defend his father’s honor,” Graham announced, leaning on the podium for support. His entire body ached painfully, but he had to do this. He had to ensure Carron didn’t attempt a coup before Declan could even mourn Gregor. He lifted his hand into the air, showing the totems. “And these were found in Traylon and Oberon’s discarded clothing by my deputies. These were the totems Mick and Eli’s killers wore.”

“So it was Traylon?” Magnus asked. “I knew it.” He turned to Carron. “Your precious son was a murderer. A cheat. And he didn’t deserve to lead this den. Because of Oberon’s underhanded attack, Traylon would never have been made alpha. And to be honest, I’d much rather have Declan than Traylon.”

“Declan is exiled!” Carron cried. “He no longer belongs to this den.”

“Declan didn’t attack that omega,” Graham said. “Gage is his mate. He would never harm his mate.”

More murmurs surrounded them. Magnus stared at Graham. “Is this true?”

“He told me himself yesterday. He didn’t come forward with the knowledge because Gregor asked him not to.”

“Because it’s wrong!” Carron cried. “It’s against bear law. Bear lies with human.”

“Gregor already changed the law before he was challenged. It stands!” Graham said, refusing to allow Carron to ruin his future with Asher before it ever started. “You have no power over the council, Carron. Declan is alpha.”

“So where is this alpha you claim him to be? Where is he when his den needs him?” Carron asked.

“Likely building a funeral pyre for his father. You know, the bear your son and his second murdered,” Airan spat.

“All this arguing is fruitless,” Carron yelled. “I say we vote, here and now, with the bears in this room. A show of hands. Who here wants Declan to be our alpha?”

No one lifted a hand for a moment. Graham lifted his hand high, knowing Declan might be hot-headed at times, but he was their best bet given the circumstances.

Airan lifted his hand at Graham’s side.

The Magnus lifted his.

Others began to lift theirs… until almost every hand in the room was lifted.
