Ethan kept looking down at his phone willing the signal icon to light up, but the systems were so screwed that he had little hope. He had to find a way to contact Ryan and Deshawn. He had to make sure they were safe. God knew his husband, as a rule, had the unique talent of finding himself involved in terrorist plots on a far too frequent basis. But now it was him that found himself smack dab in the middle of a nightmare.

He was having a hard time focusing since his ears were still ringing and he was dizzy.

Jesus, is this what it’s like for Logan? No, Logan can’t hear at all. I can hear, it’s just mishmash. Okay, concentrate.

He looked around the area and started to tear up. The grounds surrounding the Aliolani Hale were littered with people. Some bleeding, some crying, all covered in dirt and dust from the explosion that had decimated the Federal Building a block over.

He’d been doing some sightseeing in the capitol district, taking pictures of the historic buildings they used in Hawaii 5-0, when he’d found himself flying through the air and being thrown to the ground. It felt as though the ground beneath his feet should have opened up and swallowed him whole. Then seconds later, great plumes of smoke had filled the air and that’s when he’d heard the first screams. It had taken him several minutes to figure out for a fact what had happened.

Shards and bits of glass from buildings in the area covered the ground after exploding outward, and raining over anyone in their path. Now he sat. Waiting. Waiting to be told what to do. Waiting to find the courage to ask questions about how many were injured or killed. Waiting to accept how a place of such beauty now resembled the gates of hell. He saw another fire truck race down the street and standing next to him was a young man, staring toward the shell of what was part of the Prince Kūhiō Federal Building.

“Are you okay?”

The man looked over to where clouds of dust rose in the air “That was my office. I… I was on my way back after a meeting.”

He swallowed. “You…you, um. I don’t know. What do you do?”

“Attorney. U.S. District Court of Hawaii. Assistant to Judge Wilson.”

Ethan laughed and the guy speared him with a look of pure rage. Understandable since the guy’s boss had probably just died.

He held up his hands. “No, no, not what you think.” He held out his hand. “Ethan Harrison. Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Mass. Apparently I can’t even get away from the job while on vacation.”

They shook hands and continued to stare at the sky where smoke filled the air. He could only see part of the building since the complex extended down the block, but it didn’t take a Harvard graduate to figure out that he’d been extremely lucky.
