Chapter 16

Preston

It took everything in me not to look back. My eyes were moist, but I shrugged it off. Driving home wasn’t easy. Probably because I’d envisioned having her in my car, right beside me. But now I was alone.

I turned on the TV but didn’t pay attention. It only made me think of her. I couldn’t even sit on the couch.

So I took a cold shower and tried to block her out of my mind. But she was there every time I opened my eyes. I saw her everywhere. I remembered the night we’d spent together. Her in my bed.

I’d been hoping for progress. A way to move the relationship forward. But all I’d done was push her away.

Lying in bed, I thought about all the things I wouldn’t be a part of anymore. The custody battle. Her family. Trey. I’d started to like the idea of having someone to care about. But now she was gone.

It was all my fault. I’d been too impatient. I’d wanted all of her, and now I’d have to settle for nothing.

A few days passed. Those were the worst, because I couldn’t stop thinking about her.

I wanted to know what had happened with Kevin. Would she really have to go to court?

Would Trey be all right?

I came close to calling her so many times. But she didn’t want to talk to me. She wanted some space.

Only a selfish man would ignore her request. Maybe I was selfish. For wanting all of her.

By Friday, I couldn’t take it anymore. So I went to her father’s restaurant without calling first. I bought her a dozen roses and a box of chocolates beforehand. I was prepared for some major groveling.

I’d apologize. I’d tell her whatever she wanted to hear.

If she wanted to slow things down, then that was fine.

I would take what I could get. Because it was better than never seeing her at all.

But when I made it to the restaurant, I saw Kevin through the window. He had Trey cradled in his arms. Perplexed, I paused and moved out of the way so they wouldn’t see me. Had she forgiven him?

I didn’t understand why Trey was all over Kevin. Then again, he was his father.

But the bruises I’d found on his body were left by someone who had never known the meaning of love.

When Savannah left with him, I trashed the chocolates and the roses.

They looked like a family. The truth is... they were. And I’d never had anything close to that.

I saw patients for the rest of the day. It was a nice distraction. Until I remembered the look on Savannah’s face. Even though she’d left with Kevin and Trey, she didn’t appear too happy about it.

“Hey, son.” Dad came into my office, pulling me out of a daze.

“Hey.” I looked at my computer.

“Mrs. Reynolds is here. Her son broke his foot again.”

“What do they do with that kid?” I shook my head.

“Not everyone is cut out for contact sports.”

“Well, Mrs. Reynolds and her husband need to get a clue.
