Mrs. Kelton left several hours later. The small cabin smelled of fresh pine and was completely decorated. The large spruce tree that Luke selected stood in the corner adorned with red ribbon, ornaments, strung popcorn and cranberries.

Luke was out in the barn. Lanie sat on the settee beside Angelica. The medication the doctor gave her had eased the pain enough so she could sit up for a while.

“Tell me a story, Angel.”

Angelica snuggled the girl and drew her closer. “I’ll tell you the Christmas story.”

“About the baby Jesus being born?”

Angelica nodded. “First, will you bring my valise out here?”

Lanie stood and skipped out of the room. She returned in moments with the case. She set it on the floor and helped to unlatch the straps.

Angelica leaned over and removed a dress and a few odds and ends. Finally, she grabbed an item and sat up with it in her hands.

“Oh, what is it?” Lanie’s eyes were glued to the object.

“It’s called a snow globe. It’s round like a globe and when you shake it, the flakes inside look like snow.”

Angelica handed the globe to Lanie. The child took it carefully, turned it upside down and right side up. “It does look like it’s snowing. What‘s that place?” Lanie squinted, trying to make out the small scene inside the globe.

“That is Bethlehem. See the small stable? That is where baby Jesus was born.”

“I see it now. And look, there is an angel over the stable. She looks just like you.”

Angelica shook her head and a trill of laughter spilled from her lips. “Lanie, I am not an angel. I do not look anything like that angel.”

Lanie stamped one foot. “Yes, you do. You are my angel.”
