Chapter 20

“He will be here, you’ll see,” the man with the code name Adder said to Daisy. He pushed her golden hair back over her left ear. She wore a huge smile and stroked his chest with a light touch. They passionately kissed.

No one in the raucous crowd even seemed to notice the couple. They positioned themselves in the back of what amounted to be around a hundred heated protesters. Many held signs with various environmental messages and anti-capitalist slurs. The Planet Rescue leader who spoke with the crowd the other day stood atop the hood of a car and screamed platitudes and led chants. Even with his megaphone it proved difficult to hear over the loud and boisterous crowd.

The scene was total hysteria. Some peaceful protesters played drums in a circle near the back. Most were whipped up on various drugs and wore the eyes of killers. They bounced up and down in front of a gated fracking site a mile from their camp in the hills of Pennsylvania. Guards lined the inside of the ominous fence and police were en route. The media had the cameras rolling from every angle.

In the previous days, Adder had sunk his teeth into many of these “useful idiots,” as he referred to them. It was almost as easy as brainwashing Daisy. Adder realized the magnitude of these actions would hit him later when he would inevitably fall into a drunken haze of guilt. But in the moment he would maintain absolute professionalism. He had a job to do and his training would not let him focus on anything but the mission. Soon it would be all over. There were always potential curveballs thrown at the last minute, but with every passing second the chances of something going wrong became less likely.

Adder hugged Daisy and slipped the package under her coat in the back of her pants. Adder made the delivery with such a fluid motion that even a trained eye would have had trouble reading the situation.

“You have yours too, right?” Daisy whispered.

“That’s the plan,” he replied as he slid back from his hug and gently embraced her face with the palm of his hand.

Daisy shook nervously. Tagging along for these protests was supposed to be about having fun and gaining life experience during summer vacation. Never in her darkest dreams did she imagine she would commit such a deed. But this was love. And the dying planet could not wait for a savior any longer.

Adder sensed her hesitancy. “Listen, you can do this,” he reassured her. “I can read people, it’s a gift. You have more strength than I’ve ever seen. This is the start of the revolution to save the planet.”

Daisy continued to shake. “Look, I want to be a part of this, I do. It’s just that…”

Oh boy, thought Adder. Here we go.

“…I don’t want to go to prison. I can’t save the planet from there.”

“That won’t happen. You’ll see. We’ll slip away into the crowd and meet back at my van.
