In the carriage, I found Langton huddled into a corner, looking miserable.

"What happened?" I asked as I joined him, sharing his side of the carriage and putting my hand on his shoulder.

"Nothing," he protested. "He was cold and angry, pressing me for details over and over. He wanted to know everything you said, looking for some hidden meaning somewhere. He wanted to know what you were like towards me, if you'd ever been improper or even rude, although he seemed more interested to know if you were kind or not."

"I'm so sorry," I said again. "You won't be going back, and if I'd have known your mother wasn't there, you would not have been there last night." I wanted to know what Langton had said, but was afraid to ask. Langton's eyes softened, and he smiled shyly at me, some of the light coming back into his face. "No. I put him off, told him only the truth whilst keeping to myself what he was truly after. Tell me about your night?"

I smiled. "My night was lovely, in contrast with yours.

Truitt is quite taken with you."

Langton beamed, his eyes dancing. "Is he? Is he really coming to visit?"

That, it appeared, was my cue to turn my mind to business.

We had three appointments in the morning, all of which were uneventful. We then stopped at a few shops, where I ordered some items as gifts, and had an early luncheon. After we ate, we discussed music for a time, watching the people pass by and avoiding each other's eyes. It was insanely easy to put our mutual desires aside when in the company of others; when left to
