Phone Call

Beki walked across campus, lost in her thoughts. She just signed off on her acceptance to law school as her senior year was coming to a close. The last two years went by faster than she expected, which she was thankful for. She did not want to have time to sit and think about the life she gave up forty-four hours away.

“Hey girl,” Brad said as Beki slid into the chair across from him. They met for lunch every Tuesday and Thursday in the same quaint cafe off campus.

“Hi,” she smiled, setting her bag beside her chair.

“So,” Brad smiled, “You bringing Sam tonight?”

Beki made a face. “I don’t know.”

“Come on, Beki; it’s been two years. You need to get over that guy already.”

She looked at him and scowled. “I am over him. It has been well over 15 months since we spoke last.”

She kept it a secret from Brad that she called Kace’s number weekly to hear his voice, and then she would hang up.

Brad nodded, “That’s great, so Sam?”

“I just don’t want to date yet.” she bit into her sandwich

Brad shook his head. “It’s a shame. Sam is pretty great,”

Beki looked at him.

“Why are you always trying to hook me up with people? Are you and Melanie sick of me being the third wheel?”

“God, no, we could not care less. We worry about you and don’t want you to be lonely.”

“I’m fine,” Beki lied.

“Okay,” Brad sighed, giving in to her lie. It was a tired argument between the two of them.

He looked at his watch. “Oh shit, hang on. I have to make a call. Be right back.”

Beki nodded as he walked away. Once he was out of sight, she pulled out her phone and opened her photo gallery. Scrolling through the pictures of Kace that she refused to delete. She wasn’t ready to take that final step. The truth was she missed Kace more than she let on, even to herself, and was, in fact, not over him. She wondered if there would ever be a day when Kace Charlus did not intrude on her thoughts.

More often than not, when she is alone at night, a threatening panic settles inside her, resulting in her shedding tears over him. It convinced Beki she was a walking definition of a broken heart.

But she knew she couldn’t contact him, no matter how much she wanted to. She knew it was better for both of them, so she had not been home since leaving Lemon Grove two years ago. She made a point of staying in Boston over the summers; she did not trust herself to stay away from him; instead, she flew her dad out to her. He stayed with her and Brad for a week. His sobriety was going great, and he was doing well at work. During his most recent visit, Tom informed her he had seen Kace at the market, and Kace had cut all his hair off. Beki tried to imagine him with short hair. Then, of course, she had to ask the ultimate question of whether he was dating.
