Chapter Fifteen

The next morning, Hastion came downstairs to find that the minister had already flared to the council chambers in Ista, Garathan’s capital city. He offered a prayer of thanks to the Powers as he sat down at the table—as tired as he was, he really needed to eat to maintain his energy, but he would have skipped breakfast and gone about his business for the day if it were just Cecine and him at the table.

He would have liked to see Shelley but she and the twins were still asleep. He envied her—he’d passed the night tossing restlessly, so at odds with himself he feared both his head and his heart might explode.

Last evening he’d offered similar sexual services to Shelley and the minister, practically forcing oral sex on them, and both acts had given him an intoxicating sense of his own power. And yet, ultimately, they’d left him feeling very differently—the heated abandon with which Shelley had responded to him made his blood simmer and a smug, satisfied smile tug at his lips, while remembering the minister’s indifference soured his stomach.

But it was his own disgraceful lack of control that tightened his muscles into knots of tension and sent him flying into the capital, where Tiber’s office in the medical complex was located.

Though he hadn’t made an appointment, he was admitted immediately.

“Hastion, what brings you to my door so soon?” Tiber asked with a smile, rising from behind his console. Like Hastion, he was still in uniform. His eyes landed briefly on the mark on Hastion’s cheek but he let it pass unremarked.

“Armitran informed me you were here today.” Hastion glanced at the empty seating area. “I hope I’m not keeping you from an appointment.”

“Not at all. I’m merely on call for the day as a favor. I won’t resume civilian service until Jasmine resigns her commission.”

“How is she?” Hastion stalled.

“Doing very well—Shauss is giving her the local tour today and she’ll begin her training tomorrow. Would you care to have a meal in the Commons with me?”

“I would discuss an issue of some sensitivity with you first.”

“Of course. Let’s sit.”

They retired to the comfortable seating area, whose windows faced into the vast, sunlit aquarium that formed the center of every building in the complex. Unable to relax, Hastion leaned forward, bracing his forearms on his knees.

“You may be at ease, Hastion,” Tiber said gently. “I will keep everything you say in my confidence.”

“I have no fear on that score.”

“I’m glad to hear it.” Tiber hesitated before adding, “Jasmine is concerned about you.”

Hastion’s eyes widened. “Me? Why?”

“She noticed your relationship with your father was somewhat strained and worries that she might have incited some ill feelings.”

“Peserin, no!” Envious as he was of Jasmine, the last thing Hastion wanted was for her to feel badly. “It isn’t her fault our father is the way he is. I hope you made that clear.”

“I did my best to reassure her but I wasn’t at liberty to share your confidences. You should speak to her about him.
