“Why didn’t you tell me you were getting threatening messages?” Pixie asks as we make our way to the police station.
Last night after I promised Max that I’d go to the police I had rung Pixie and explained that I won’t be meeting her in my usual spot early tomorrow morning as I had to go to the police station. When she asked why, I told her and then she said she wanted to come with me. Truth be told, I was grateful for the company.
“I didn’t think they were for me at first until I received all the ones I got yesterday.” I had showed her all the messages and even she said that Chester would never stoop that low. It made me feel even guiltier for asking him. Max told me this morning that he had tried to call Chester, but he’s ignoring him.
“I feel so bad about last night. Max and Chester are such good friends and now it looks as though I’m breaking them apart. Chester’s going to think the worst of me now.”
Pixie pffts. “Don’t be so silly. It was Max’s decision to call him and ask him point-blank whether he was involved, wasn’t it?”
“Yes, but—”
“But nothing. None of this is your fault. Whoever this creep is needs to be found and dealt with appropriately. You’re doing the right thing.”
I bite my lip. “Are you sure? If I do this then I’ll constantly worry about my aunt.”
Just as I say this my phone pings, alerting me of a message. I dig my phone out and look. It’s a photograph and in it is my aunt sitting at her local café drinking coffee.
“Fuck!” I shout, causing Pixie to look over my shoulder.
“Shit, is that your aunt?”
Tears immediately well in my eyes. I nod. “Yes, it’s her. She told me she likes to get a coffee every morning at this local café in Brighton.”
Another ping alerts me to a message.
Unknown Number: What did I tell you about going to the police?
I look up at Pixie. “What am I going to do? I can’t go to the police now. Whoever this is means business and he’s obviously watching me.”
Pixie looks away, biting her lip. We both look around like we’ll find someone watching us. Of course there’s no one in sight. Just regular walkers going about their day.
Suddenly, as if lightning’s struck, Pixie turns to me, grabbing my arm. “I may know someone who knows someone who’s this big tech wizard. Apparently this guy once hacked into the university and downloaded a load of exam papers. If I give him your number he may be able to discreetly find out who this arsehole is.”
Relieved, I grab Pixie’s hand. “Yes, if you can do that, I would be grateful. If I go to the police and something happens to my aunt I will never forgive myself.”
Pixie squeezes my hand back. “Don’t worry. We’ll get through this together. Okay?”
“Thanks.”
It’s later when I’m settling in my class at school that I get another text message.
