Lizzie tried to put the pieces together as the clip-clop of the mare’s hooves sounded on the pavement. The air was cool, and she pulled a blanket over their legs.

“I’m fine,” Caleb said, but she knew he was cold. She also knew he was worried. She could tell by the tension that emanated from him and the way he kept glancing at the road behind them.

“We’re okay,” he said as if sensing her upset and trying to reassure her. “No one will see us.”

Except she was tired and nervous. The day had been long but had started off so promising. Foolishly she had thought they would find Emma. Now they were even more confused about where she was. Instead of getting closer to finding her, she was slipping through their fingers.

“Where did Mr. Whitaker take her?” Lizzie mused aloud.

“If only we could ask him.”

She nodded. “Yet that would set off all types of warning buzzers. I’m afraid his brother-in-law’s security men would be at Respite Haven before we could ask the questions we need answered. I’m already worried we’ve said too much to too many people. I trust Ruben, but I’m not sure about Irene. She seemed nice enough and shared information, yet a woman who talks so easily could divulge information about two people asking questions.”

“I hope she won’t tell Mr. Whitaker about our late night visit. To be safe, I want you to stay close to the house tomorrow. We’ll both keep our eyes on the road and make certain no one driving by the farm spots either of us.

“I’ll help your aunt. She said she has much to do.”

“And I’ll work on the farm, but I’ll be watching for a dark sedan with tinted windows.”

Headlights appeared in the distance, heading in their direction. Caleb nudged Lizzie. “Climb in the back of the buggy.”

“What?”

He pointed to the approaching car. “I don’t want your face captured in the headlights of oncoming traffic. Hurry.”

She climbed into the rear and slumped down in the seat, her heart pounding. “Can you tell who it is?”

“Probably someone leaving town, but I don’t know where they are going this time of night.”

The lights nearly blinded Caleb. He held his hand in front of his eyes to shield them from the glare.

The car raced past.

“Did you see the color of the vehicle?” she asked.

“It looked black, but at night it’s hard to tell.”

What wasn’t hard to tell, as she peered through the small opening at the rear of the buggy, was that the car had pulled into the nursing home parking lot and was turning around. It angled back onto the main road and accelerated.

Her pulse raced. “Caleb, they’re coming after us.”

“Hold on.” He flicked the reins. Daisy picked up her pace. “There’s a turnoff, but I don’t know if we’ll make it in time.”

How could the turnoff offer protection with the expanse of farmland on each side of the road? She glanced back again, her stomach churning. The sedan was racing toward them.
