CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Water dripped from Tori's hair, forming a steady rhythm as it hit the cold tile beneath her feet. The chill of her soaked clothes seemed to seep into her bones, yet she barely noticed, her focus fixed on the man on the other side of the one-way glass, viewing the interrogation room beyond.

They’d all escaped the sewers, just barely. Marcus Trenton, age 37, plumbing inspector, sat alone in the interrogation room. His fingers tapped an erratic beat on the stark metal table, each tap a staccato against the silence of the room. He had a nervous quality about him, and his features were gaunt. He had faded tattoos along his arms. And though his eyes were sunken, he was not a thin man. He had a bit of a belly, but the musculature in his forearm suggested a laborer. His fingers were calloused, and his eyes stared directly at the table. He didn’t glance around the room, didn’t seem too concerned with anything but the drip-drip-drip of water tumbling from his bangs against the table.

His features were that of a cornered animal, wary and ready to defend. Tori watched his every movement through the mirror, running through the evidence.

His truck had been seen near Jenna’s abandoned car. He had an altercation at Jenna’s building, and he would’ve had access and know-how, given his profession, to other homes in the area. It wasn’t clear if he’d served the other victims, just yet, but they were looking into it.

As she observed him, the memory of the recent events in the flooded tunnels played out in her mind like a haunting film reel. The darkness, the rushing water, and the desperate struggle to survive were still vivid in her memory.

But they’d made it.

And Tori wasn’t about to take their survival for granted.

She observed him, noting the tension in his shoulders, the way his eyes darted occasionally to the door. A solitary bead of water traced a path down his cheek, indistinguishable from sweat. The stench of the sewers clung to both of them, a reminder of the chaos below the city streets they had just escaped.

Javi was absent, pulled away to document the pandemonium that had unfolded underground. Protocol dictated Tori to wait for him, but the sergeant by the door shifted, catching her attention. Due to the mess in the sewers, Detective Sanderson had taken jurisdiction, and demanded Tori wait until they sorted out what had happened before she spoke with the suspect.

She hadn’t agreed. Evident by what she was about to do.

Leaving the observation room, Torie rounded to the hall where an officer stood beside the interrogation room door, his eyes glazed with the sort of exhaustion that came with days of mandatory overtime.

"Your captain needs you," Tori lied to the man at the door.

The officer, a sergeant by his uniform, looked at her then back at the door to the interrogation room. Hesitation flickered across his face. She leaned in slightly, a quiet assurance in her tone. "It's fine. He’s not going anywhere.
